President's Message

Dear Club Members and Friends,

Welcome back President Victoria.  Vicki and Ian arrived back safely on Tuesday evening and will tell us about her trip on Friday morning.

Last Friday we had a most informative talk from Robert Jordan on the very serious subject of ovarian cancer.  Since his own personal tragedy, with his wife dying from the disease, Robert has become an ambassador for Ovarian Cancer Australia and has made it his mission to publicise and educate people about the disease, as widely as he can.  He has also taken a fund raising role and visits with large businesses to generate funds for research.  Robert is a former Rotarian.

A very important and pleasant task last Friday, was to induct Binoe Verghese as a member of our club.  Allen Horrell, Assistant District Governor from Riverside very kindly attended and helped with the induction.  I know you will all help make Binoe feel welcome.in our friendly club.  Binoe lives locally and is keen to do whatever he can to help us.

This week Ana is going to tell us all about her amazing safari trip around a lot of Australia with a bunch of other enthusiastic young exchange students.  I dread to think how much sleep was achieved on the trip and how the chaperones were holding up om their return.

Next week Mak Khalil is going to talk to us about his varied life and work.  If you have not heard his interesting tale, it is certainly worth coming along to listen.

The following week on the 23rd of June is our Changeover dinner.  The challenge is to make it bigger and better than last year.  We have a new venue this year and need to support Pat’s great efforts in securing such a good dinner deal.  We only have a couple of weeks left to provide some raffle items for Pat.  Please bring them along either this Friday or next.  If you cannot find anything in the cupboard, wine is a good alternative.

A reminder about our July social night at Vicki and Ian’s place.  This is a dine below the line event.  We will eat for $2 a head and donate a self determined amount that could resemble the cost of a restaurant meal or some other value, to Oaktree.  We have to donate before changeover.  Please let me know what you would like to do.  You can attend and donate or just donate.  Your choice.  I am keen to see what we can do for $2.  We might introduce it at home permanently!  If it saves money it must be good!

Some of you would know that Ann Fitz-Gibbon was in a lot of pain when she very kindly hosted Bobby from Inverell.  Ann had some treatment in North Shore Private on Monday, which I understand has been successful.  I am sure Ann would love to hear from you.  The club sent some flowers earlier in the week.

Best regards
David Martin

The 2017 Country NSW Student's DIGIT Visit.
The Rotary Club of North Ryde runs an annual tour, in May, of local technology based companies for students from Country NSW.  We have been running the programme for 12 years or so.
We work with Rotary clubs in West Wyalong, Forbes and Inverell to source suitable students from year 10 at their local high schools.  We take up to 8 students each year.  The students travel down to Sydney on the Sunday and are then hosted by Rotarians through until Friday morning when they return home. The idea is to provide the students with an insight into not only how technology is used in the workplace but what job opportunities there are available to them after school.

This year Rotarians took 6 Country NSW students Lane Blunsdon, Bobby Wighton, Tessa Pymont, Joshua Penhall, Lucy Holland and German exchange student, Lukas Ciroth  on a series of visits to technology based companies including Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, IBM and Google and other major companies which use technology in their businesses including Coles, Optus, Cochlear and Konica Minolta.  They also saw how technology is used within the Universities of UTS and Macquarie and the Sydney Observatory.

Here are some photos from this year's visit. For more photos see here and for photos of the farewell dinner see here.
