What a very good presentation last Friday from Jay Allen of the Melanoma Institute Australia. Ten years ago Jay, a truck driver, followed his wife’s advice to have a mole on his ankle checked. It was a melanoma. He needed two operations and other treatment before he was clear of the cancer. He was so impressed by the Melanoma Institute and the support they gave him and others that he initially volunteered to speak to groups like ours. He now works full time for the Institute but also continues with volunteer fundraising, including walking from Brisbane to Sydney. The message is not to ignore changes in moles or the eruption of a new spot on the skin. This message is not just for older people but also for the young as exposure to sun can lead to a melanoma in the young. Of course prevention is also important – slip, slop, slap.
Sadly, David Martin has had to make a sudden trip to Scotland as his brother’s leukemia has returned and he has been told there is nothing else that can be done. I know all our thoughts are with David and his family. David has said he is really sorry he cannot now be at the Fun Run but I have assured him we will all step up to do the work he was doing. This Friday we will have a working meeting to finalise everything for the Fun Run.
We have a few others who will be away for work including Rob (a ROMAC commitment) and Asim (working in South Africa). Asim will also be away for Nadia’s citizenship ceremony, however we will be there in force. The ceremony is Thursday 24 August at 6:30pm the Civic Hall. I hope many of you can join Nadia and of course Yaha.
Before David left he led two tables (total 17) at the Rotaract trivia night. While they did not win the trivia, David won the best dressed as a “youthful” Harry Potter. David probably will not be here for the Eastwood Gladesville trivia night on 9 September (see flyer in this bulletin) but let’s see if we can get a table together.
Sad news that PDG Les Whitcroft AM died last Saturday night aged 97. Les joined Ryde Rotary in 1967 and was District Governor 1976-1977.
In David’s absence. Liane Corbett will let DLC know numbers each week. Please email or call Liane by 9:00am on the Wednesday morning. If you do not apologise then we have to pay DLC and in turn we will have to ask you to pay. Liane’s email is lianecorbett39@gmail.com and her phone number is 0408 157 033.
See you Friday.
Kind regards
Victoria Crawford

Advisory Boards – Unlocking success in your organisation
Having a great board of advisors is a powerful asset for your Rotary Club (or any organisation for that matter) to get objective advice, identify unexplored opportunities, open new doors and increase profitability and sustainability.
This workshop covers what you need to know in order to establish an effective Advisory Board from inception to succession. Unlike corporate boards, advisory boards do not have fiduciary responsibility and their advice is non-binding.
Topics include:
The importance of governance in organisations
How to setup an effective advisory board
Choosing the right people for the board
Setting objectives, expectations and compensation
Planning for Meetings
Running effective board meetings
Best practice communication strategies
We'd appreciate registration by Tuesday 5 September, so that necessary catering and room organisation arrangements can be made.
