Thank you for your kind words and thoughts after the death of my mother. And for your concern for Ian. He is pretty much okay now.
I understand that last week’s speaker was excellent and that the extent of modern day slavery was a revelation to many. It is a scourge we must as a society act on.
Shankar caught up with Sam in Umea. See the photo of Tomas, a Rotarian friend of Shankar’s, Sam and her host parents who Shankar says are really lovely - just like all of ours.
This week I had a meeting with Clint Brown from The Ranch. He is interested in working with us on a few projects so watch this space. I’d like to talk with the club so we can really put some good ideas to him.
Cynthia Mota of Ray White North Ryde also contacted me re their “A Little Ray of Giving” and linking it the “Tree of Joy” again. I am seeing her on Thursday.
World Polio Day is on 24 October. While we have not organised an event it would be a great opportunity to consider personally supporting.
Mandy and Barbara went to the Social Media Training so watch out for some new emphasis in that area.
We also have some additional resources for Board members which we’ll put on our member web page.
If you know anyone working in insurance, or recently, they may like to be the District Insurance officer for 2018-2019. Let me know and I can give you more information.
This week Helen Crouch from North Ryde Community Aid will be talking to us about Time Banking. I’m looking forward to it as it should enable us to tap into other resources.

Gill Hicks is considered to be one of the most thought provoking, powerful and life affirming speakers in Australia and the UK. She is globally known as an Advocate for Sustainable Peace and a valuable resource in Countering Violent Extremism.
Her devotion to making a personal greater contribution and positive difference to the urgency of building peace was realised when she was made permanently injured in the London terrorist Bombings on July 7th, 2005.
Her ‘lived experience’, from survival to rehabilitation as a double amputee created a clear demarcation from all she had known before the bombings, being at the helm of some of the UK’s most prestigious and respected institutions – including Publishing Director of the architecture, design and contemporary culture magazine, Blueprint, Director of the Dangerous Minds design consultancy and Head Curator at the Design Council, along with being one of the first women to be invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (the RSA).
Her 2nd Life is built on what she describes as a series of conscious choices, of mindfulness and being aware of the importance of the moment. Sharing what she has learnt about herself, about humanity and the extraordinary and what she believes is an inherent ability to not only face but to rise in the wake of adversity is not only inspiring, but it is a valuable insight into what is possible in life.
There are a number of accommodation options available in Leura, Katoomba and surrounding towns. However the Fairmont Resort has provided options for the Conference weekend.

From time to time, Lower Blue Mountains Rotary Club conducts community information nights featuring interesting guest speakers and open to members of the general public.
Such is planned for Emu Plains Sports Club on Tuesday, October 24, at 6.30 for a 7 pm start.
The guest speaker is Mohammed Alae Rabbi Habi and the stimulating topic is ‘Demystifying Islam’.
Mohammed Alae Rabbi Habi is a member of ‘Muslims Down Under’, a group of volunteers from across Australia driving a new campaign sponsored by the Muslim Community – ‘Meet a Muslim over coffee and cake’.
Mohammed Alae Rabbi Habi is a leader at Baitul Huda mosque in Sydney’s Marsden Park and the national spokesperson for the group. He says the group is willing to answer any and all questions members of the public may have about Islam.
The group has recently run successful Q & A sessions at Western Sydney University’s Parramatta and Lithgow campuses.
Whilst some people are interested in Islam’s history and theology, Mr Habbi says most ask questions stemming from media reports … ‘Is Islam really a violent religion? If not, why has violence happened? What does Jihad mean?’
This positive initiative is designed to counter misinformation about Islam and an increase in extremism – not only on the side of Muslims but also on the far right within other community groups!
So, President Rennie Schmid has issued a general invitation to all interested community groups, Rotary clubs, churches, high school students to join Lower Blue Mountains Rotarians on Tuesday, October 24.
Visitors are welcome to attend and share a Rotary meal. Cost is $25 per head and bookings are with Rotarian Amanda Roots on 0429 393 095. However, people are also welcome to attend as interested observers without taking a meal. Such people are still required to book with Amanda Roots to ensure adequate seating is provided.
