President's Message

Dear Club Members and Friends,

The winner for Grill’d for the month of September has been decided.  We came in second.  Apparently the night we ate at Grill’d the jar had already been emptied twice but another group had been emptied three times!  Still it is a good result with a cheque for $100 in a few weeks.

We haven’t formally met for a couple of weeks so it will be great to see everyone this Friday for a special guest Sergio Dos-Santos, Acting Consul General Timor-Leste.  Over the years since Independence we have supported several projects in Timor-Leste so it will be good to hear about what has been happening in the country.

The next Carols planning meeting is 18 October at 7:45 pm so if you are available to come along let me know.

There is also a social media workshop on Saturday the 14th October from 8.30 am till 12 noon (latest).  This event is to be held on Ground Floor 1 Pottery Lane, Lane Cove (cnr Little St) opposite the Lane Cove Pool (parking underneath.  Mandy Van is attending but it would be good if someone else could go along as well.  If you are available let me know so I can register you.

Helen Crouch will be speaking on 20 October about Time Banking but this is also Hat Day for mental health so the challenge is to wear a hat to the meeting – the more unusual the better.

The last Rotary Leadership Institute for this year is on the weekend of 28-29 October at the District Office, 3/7 Sefton Rd Thornleigh.  8:00 am till 4:00 pm.  Cost is now $75 but the Club will cover this.  Those who have done the course found it really good so if you are interested go to rli.rotarydistrict9685.org.au to register and let me know.

If you’d like to learn more about what being a District Governor means then there is a Special Interest Meeting on Sunday 19 November 2017 between 10:00am and 12 noon at the District Office.

Next year’s District Conference is on Saturday 10 to Sunday 11 March 2018 in Leura.
For details go to – conference2018.rotarydistrict9685.org.au.  Full registration $280.  Accommodation extra.  This should be a great conference and it is always great to get away together so think about whether you’d like to come along.  Partners are always welcome and as a previous resident of Leura I’d encourage you to come and discover more about our wonderful Blue Mountains.

6 October – Sergio Dos-Santos, Acting Consul General Timor-Leste

GUEST SPEAKER - DR GILL HICKS

Gill Hicks is considered to be one of the most thought provoking, powerful and life affirming speakers in Australia and the UK. She is globally known as an Advocate for Sustainable Peace and a valuable resource in Countering Violent Extremism.

Her devotion to making a personal greater contribution and positive difference to the urgency of building peace was realised when she was made permanently injured in the London terrorist Bombings on July 7th, 2005.

Her ‘lived experience’, from survival to rehabilitation as a double amputee created a clear demarcation from all she had known before the bombings, being at the helm of some of the UK’s most prestigious and respected institutions – including Publishing Director of the architecture, design and contemporary culture magazine, Blueprint, Director of the Dangerous Minds design consultancy and Head Curator at the Design Council, along with being one of the first women to be invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (the RSA).

Her 2nd Life is built on what she describes as a series of conscious choices, of mindfulness and being aware of the importance of the moment. Sharing what she has learnt about herself, about humanity and the extraordinary and what she believes is an inherent ability to not only face but to rise in the wake of adversity is not only inspiring, but it is a valuable insight into what is possible in life.
