21 June, 2024
Hello everyone,
As I think about this being my last message to you as President, I am reminded that yes, being President is awesome and a huge responsibility to the club, but I like that as a club, we are not denoted by the position we hold. We are a team, and we work well as one.

DG Christine Owen had as one of her focus areas, coming into her year, club collaboration. I feel that the Rotary Club of North Ryde had already begun this process, we just tweaked a few things and found the different strengths we all bring to our clubs. We have worked with other clubs on different goals, both theirs and ours. We have learnt so many wonderful ways to serve the community and have each managed to fulfill our fundraising goals.

Membership is the area that needs more focus with our small club. So I do ask that if you have one or two friends that you know would bring something unique to the club, invite them along to a meeting or an activity. Speaking to different presidents of our Riverside cluster, some clubs have successfully engaged new members, and these members have gone on to hold key positions in their club. Well done.

Pete and I attended the opening and closing lunch and graduation of the Winter Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) for District 9685, on the past weekend from 14-16 June. 57 participants took part and the three students we sponsored said they had the most amazing time. They all said they learnt so many leadership skills and feel that some of their thoughts on engagement at school, and in their lives, have changed perspective. Well done to The RYPEN team again.

Thank you to all the hard workers, again, who gave up some time or all their day, for the Bunnings BBQ at Gladesville last Saturday 15 June. It was cold but we warmed up with some music, dance steps and yoga moves - much to the entertainment of the public! A hearty rendition of "Happy Birthday" rang out through the car park for Brian. Thank you for choosing to spend some of your special day with us Brian. We managed to sell 69 of the 70 kilos of sausages. One customer was so excited that we had nice gluten free bread, she made a $5.00 donation as well.

DG Christine Owen held a luncheon to thank her district leaders on Saturday 15 June at Pennant Hills Golf Club. I had a great time catching up with friends and having fellowship at a table where I did not know many. I enjoy this, as it broadens my views through the eyes of others. I chose a great table because there were PDG’s plus movers and shakers sitting with me. Everyone was willing to give me help and advice on the topics I asked about. So much fun!

Of course, the buzz around the room was about the Singapore Conference, and how inspired everyone who attended, has come home feeling motivated and with some achievable new ideas and areas of focus they feel their clubs can run with. Congratulations to our PDG Jennifer Scott for running the whole conference and for her well deserved AM on the Kings birthday honours list.

Congratulations also to Melanie Lewis for what I understand was a packed-out breakout session, with queues out the door to get in, and listen to Mel talk about “Plastic soup” and the problems the world is facing because of this waste problem. Thank you, Mel, also, for choosing our club for two bronze Environment awards for our Gro Tree project. I was a bit chuffed. Well done Bob Selinger OAM, for overseeing this project with Landcare, and to Bob and Brian for bringing this with them from their previous club, Chatswood Sunrise.

All too soon it will be twelve months gone, and we will be farewelling our Youth Exchange student, Currito, back home to Spain. I will be sad to see him go, but have so enjoyed getting to know him, and his shenanigans whilst he has been with us. I especially thank the four host families for their support in giving Currito a family experience and such a loving experience while he was with them. Thank you to the Sullivan family, the Colville family, the Vaz family and to Barry Starr. Your help has been invaluable to Currito.

We will be having a farewell luncheon for Currito at our house on Sunday 23 June from 11:00am, so please come along and bring a dish that you feel our boy from Spain will love. If you need any more details just drop me a line.

I look forward to gathering for our Annual Celebration Dinner and Changeover on Friday 28 June 2024, at the North Ryde RSL, where we can all grab a drink and chat about our great year of achievements.

Thank you everyone
