President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

My first two weeks as President have been very busy ones! Last Friday our first club meeting for the new Rotary year was a club assembly. We looked at where we are now, two years into our 5 year plan. We undertook a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis and members have received a questionnaire to complete. Thank you to all the club members who came along and participated in the assembly. I will collate the information and present it at our next assembly in August.

Over the past two weeks, Garry and I attended the Changeover for Ryde Club on Sunday 24 June and the Macquarie Park Changeover last Friday evening. Both Changeovers, while quite different and unique to their clubs, were very enjoyable.  The celebrations were a great opportunity for both of us to get to know our neighbouring clubs and the good work that they do in the community. I look forward to working with District Governor, Susan Wakefield, Assistant District Governor for Riverside Group, Julie Thorpe and all the new Club Presidents of the Riverside group,  throughout the year and continuing my personal journey learning about Rotary.

On Saturday evening we attended the District Changeover at Hornsby RSL along with Rob Wilkinson, Mandy Van and Pam and Tom Bennett. Again, this was a very enjoyable evening with great company and a lovely venue. I can highly recommend members to go along to a District Changeover. It was very inspiring hearing the achievements of clubs in the District and their individual members.

With six weeks to go to the North Ryde Fun Run we will be focusing on that event to ensure its success. The date is Sunday 26 August and there will be plenty of jobs for everyone, so please keep the date free! Fortunately we have been offered help from  Ryde, Macquarie Park and Eastwood-Gladesville Clubs as well as Epping Boys High School. We will be putting banners and posters up for the first week after the school holidays and flyers will be ready to distribute soon. Registrations are now open at northrydefunrun.com.au so please spread the word!

The first of the seminars on youth mental health will be held on Tuesday 24 July at 6p.m. The topic is  Eating and Body Image Disorders in Adolescence. For more information on this seminar and the second seminar on 22 August, see the article below in this bulletin. I can highly recommend these seminars for parents and carers. I have found the information in previous seminars I have attended very helpful - and they led me to joining our Rotary club!

This week we have Sandra Lever as guest speaker from Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre. Unfortunately Garry and I will be in Hobart for the weekend and won't be able to attend the meeting. Victoria has kindly offered to chair the meeting and I will look forward to hearing about it when we get back.

Kind regards
Pam Wood
President 2018-19

Exchange Student, Josh's July Report from Finland
This month I went on the Finland Euro tour. It was amazing! We went to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary.

My favourite city was probably Prague in the Czech Republic. It was an amazing and very pretty city with a beautiful old town. I wish we had spent more time in Slovakia, as we only drove through it. If we had stayed somewhere in the countryside, which was massive green hills and rocky cliffs dotted with ruined castles, that probably would have been my favourite place.

I also went to meet my new host grandparents that live about 6 hours north in a town called Nykarleby. They were lovely people. My mother’s parents didn’t speak any English so it definitely put my Swedish to the test.

Because a lot of the oldies are leaving this month I’ve been hanging out with them a lot. It’s been really fun and I’ve really enjoyed the contact. We’ve gone to the beach, gone shopping, and done heaps of other fun stuff together.

Because of Euro tour I haven’t had a lot of time to practice my Swedish. Talking to my grandparents was a big step forward though. I went with my family up to meet my grandparents. We also had midsummer celebrations, which was ironic, because it was 9 degrees.
