5 November 2021
Hello fellow Rotarians and friends,
I am writing this letter to you from our office which is no longer in a COVID lockdown bunker. It does feel good to be able to go that bit further to visit our family and friends again. Let us all hope this ‘opening up’ does keep progressing so we can enjoy a Christmas with our loved ones.
I do hope you all enjoyed your extra little sleep-in last Friday as we had no meeting.
There is our usual Club meeting this Friday morning and Rob has for Mick Garnett CEO of Wheelchair Sports NSW to speak to us about "Sport in a wheelchair".  So you need to be awake for the 7:15am start.
Last Saturday, 30 October, we had our lovely social get together at Blenheim Park from 10:00am till about 12noon. It was good to be able to see everybody who attended, and that there are actual bodies attached to those smiling faces we only see on the zoom screens.
I noticed that several people did support the new Café Giovette’s, in Blenheim Road shops, and brought along a coffee and something to eat. I am sure that Sam appreciated this!
We send a thank you to Sandeep and Rajesh for the lovely treats they plied us with while explaining the background to Diwali. Victoria, Mandy and Bernie also have their henna drawings to show off, thanks to Rajesh. We also now have our lamps to light on Thursday night, 4 November to show our way home.
Bernie and I attended a trivia night arranged by the e-Club of Greater Sydney. There were 23 groups on line, to answer the 5 sections of 10 questions each. We did not finish among the top place getters, however Bernie did win the best female Melbourne Cup theme hat. This Club also had difficulty with their computer zoom systems, it is good to see modern technology afflicts everyone.
Please remind your family, friends and colleagues that orders for the Christmas puddings have now closed and they will be delivered later in November, and we will then arrange for these to be distributed. There is about a total of $8,000 worth of orders that have been forwarded on to the Company to be filled. This is a great result in support for the primary school at Moree East literacy program.
There is now more information about the Mercedes Benz Car Club member enquiry I mentioned last week. Our Club has been asked to provide a breakfast BBQ of egg and bacon rolls for their upcoming social get together at Lane Cove National Park on the morning of Sunday, 28  November 2021. Please let Garry know your availability, email . Thank you, Garry.
I also want to give everyone a reminder of the up-coming BBQ at the Gladesville Bunnings store on Saturday, 13 November 2021. We are required to be double vaccinated and to wear face masks to meet the store's health and safety requirements. Please advise Garry of your vaccination status and availability for work on the day.
Remember that our Annual Celebration dinner is arranged for 3 December 2021 at Basil’s Seafood Restaurant. This will be a fun night to meet up with our friends and others in our local area in a relaxed and casual place. Garry has been in contact with the new owners, making the relevant arrangements for this. Please let Garry know of your attendance or not and any guests you may be bringing with you, as soon as possible for confirmation is required by the restaurant.
Please be aware that Secretary, Pam Wood has forwarded a short survey to all members to be completed please as soon as possible.
Here is another reminder that the Tree of Joy, at North Ryde Cox’s Road Mall, will go ahead in November and December. Pam has advised there are several of our local charities we support, that are keen to accept the donated gifts. Let us all get in the Christmas spirit and help in collecting the gifts at the tree, storing, sorting and delivering to the charities. Thanks for your work, Pam.
A meeting was held last Thursday evening 28 October 2021 at T.G. Milner football fields on Vimeria Road, with the Christmas Carols' planning committee. The stage, lighting and sound people are arranged, and the food vendors are being contacted. Roseanna has also been in contact with the entertainment parties/dancers. There is to be another planning committee get together this Thursday night 4th November 2021  at T.G. Milner football fields.
Does anyone know of a Christmas decoration company who may be willing to donate/supply decorations for 2 trees that are to be set up beside the stadium? Bernie has been chasing these, but at this stage to no avail. These planning meetings have been very positive, and everyone involved is very keen for the Christmas Carol event to proceed, to help the local community to return to a sense of a normal life. All is progressing well for a fun evening on Sunday19 December.
I am very grateful for all the hard work and commitment by everyone in our Club during these difficult times, thank you.

What a great morning we had at Blenheim Rd Park last Saturday.  Thank you Sandeep and Rajesh for wonderful treats for Diwali, not to mention the beautifully decorated tea lights and the henna tattoos.  Very special.  We also had the opportunity to celebrate Barb's birthday.  Good to see everyone.
Here are just a few photos.

Crows Nest Rotary - Funeral details for Charter Member, Cyril Clark
imageThe sad news this week from Crows Nest Rotary is that 1969 Charter Member, Cyril Clark, at the age of 94, lost his battle with illness and passed away on 28th October.   Cyril was a stalwart of Crows Nest Rotary and his passing is a great loss to members and the District, and to everyone who knew him, he was the Model Rotarian.
You are all invited to attend Cyril's Funeral Service at the Magnolia Chapel of Macquarie Park Crematorium, North Ryde, (see covid restrictions below) this Thursday, 4th November 2021 at 12.00pm.  Following the Service, a reception will be held at the North Ryde RSL, corner of Pittwater and Magdala Rd's North Ryde, in the Pittwater Function Room.
The Club Members who knew him best, have put together memories of Cyril;
Cyril dedicated his life to Rotary, serving as President, Secretary, Treasurer and Director of all Avenues of Service.
For the first 45 years Cyril had a 100% attendance record. Since then more than 85%.
For the past 20 years Cyril was the Club’s attendance Chair, that friendly welcoming face greeting all arrivals.
Cyril was the first to volunteer in all projects, fundraising and social events, and saw BBQ management at Bunnings since its inception.
He went out of his way to welcome and assimilate new members and partners.  One member says; “Cyril changed my life when he introduced me to Rotary”.
In 2004, as an Electrician, Cyril spent weeks in Narrabri after their floods, repairing damaged wiring in homes.
Cyril received many Paul Harris Fellow Awards, culminating in ‘Ruby’.
Cyril had two overseas Rotary Fellowship trips to Asia.
In summary, Cyril was known as ‘the only person we know in Rotary that no one had a bad word to say about, and Cyril didn’t have a bad word about anyone’.
Cyril will be very sadly missed by all.
Yours in Rotary Service
Philip Smith

Mentoring men - Ian Westmorland
Mentoring Men is a registered Australian charity providing free long-term one-to-one life mentoring programs for men Australia wide. They focus on a proactive approach, engaging with Australian men who need help before they spiral into crisis.  They welcome all men to engage with their mentoring programs and strive to be as diverse as the communities they serve and work within. Currently the Mentors collectively speak over 57 languages.
Ian worked for 40 years in the Australian and New Zealand utilities industries in various IT roles, mostly as an IT development and support manager. On 10 September 2013, he experienced a life-changing moment that ultimately led to his decision to retire from paid work in May 2014 and commence a volunteer mentoring career with the Raise Foundation, Kidshope and COACH mentoring programs. Following a personal challenge in 2018 Ian developed the Mentoring Men program which was officially launched in November 2018.
