President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

This week has been a very busy week with the preparations leading up to the Fun Run on Sunday. We we're very fortunate to have perfect weather for the event and a great turnout of participants. I have included some photos of the day in the photo album section of this bulletin as well as below. There will be more available soon.

Thank you to all the Rotarians from our club and others who volunteered their time to help in so many ways. Thank you also to all the family and friends who volunteered their time and energy to make the day a success.

Our meeting on Friday morning was busy filling the goodie bags for the Fun Run. It was great to have many hands there to complete the task efficiently and quickly. Thank you to everyone who helped and to Pam Bennett who sourced so many goodies for the bags.

There were so many wonderful volunteers who came om Sunday which helped to make the event a success.

I would like to extend my thanks to all our volunteers:
  • Our club members, their family and friends who have helped support the Fun Run in the lead up to the event and on the day.
  • The members of the Rotary Clubs of Eastwood- Gladesville, Ryde and Macquarie Park.
  • Stephen Sim who was MC for the day and helped create a great atmosphere and kept the day on track.
  • Sports Star Ambassador Michael Wells from the Waratahs and John Alexander OAM MP  who opened the event and supported the Fun Run throughout the morning.
  • The club committee Victoria Crawford, David Martin, Sandeep Rathi, Garry Maloney, Mandy Van and Peter Mason, who worked so hard behind the scenes and in the lead up over many months.
  • The University Representative Committee members who also supported the club committee in planning and promoting the Fun Run.
  • Paul Williamson from Macquarie Park who has helped us with the website and technical issues relating to the IT infrastructure.
  • Stephanie Long and the Rotaractors from North Sydney
  • The students from Macquarie University HAWC program
  • Nicholle McNiece and the staff from the Centre for Emotional Health.
  • Jen and  Josh Nowiczewski, Terrie McConnell, Liane Corbett, Sharon, Jared and Robert Sullivan
  • The staff and students from Robert Menzies College, Dunmore Lang College, Morling College and Macquarie University Village and
  • The staff from Macquarie University Sports and Aquatic Centre.
Finally I would like to thank our sponsors  (see below) who provided  support either financially or in kind. Without their support we would not have been able to have the Fun Run.

We hope to have the final amount of funds raised determined soon once all income and expenditure is reconciled.

The Rotary Club of Eastwood/ Gladesville will be holding a Trivia night on Saturday 14 September (see  story below). We were fortunate to have 6 members of their club help us with the Fun Run.  Please let me know if you can attend and support our fellow Rotarians with their fundraising project.

There is no club meeting this week as it is a Board meeting.

A reminder that the Rotary Club of North Ryde has been placed on the Local Matters jars for September at Grill'd Macquarie Centre. Grill'd is one of the generous sponsors who has provided prizes for the runners at the Fun Run. We encourage our members and the friends and families to visit Grill'd for a meal throughout September and place some cans in the local matters jar for the Rotary Club of North Ryde. Money raised through this jar donations will also go to Youth Mental Health. Grill'd is located at Macquarie Centre Lvl 4 via Herring Street, North Ryde, ph: 02 9888 7700

Kind regards
Pam Wood

Riverside Presidents' Meeting 23 August 2019

Victoria Crawford attended the Riverside Zone Presidents’ Meeting on 23 August 2019 on behalf of President Mak as he was in Brisbane.  The meeting was chaired by ADG Julie Thorp.  Five presidents attended.  We discussed the activities each club has planned for the next few months.

Eastwood-Gladesville club has a trivia night on 14 September at Coxs Rd Community Centre.  There will a silent auction as well as a raffle.  These trivia nights are always a great success for the club.

Hunters Hill club has a Comedy Night on 29 October at the Hunters Hill Club.  Three or four professional comedians will be performing and Michael Parsons promises a great night – as usual.  Cost will be $65-$70 including dinner.

Macquarie Park club has a Pizza, Pinot and Picasso night on 20 September.  This is a night to learn how to paint so could be lots of fun.  $60 per person.  On 1 November they are holding a pre-Melbourne Cup trivia night.  Both these events are held at 1 November at St Anthony’s Church Hall.

North Ryde club of course had the Fun Run on 25 August and President Lydia from Macquarie Park and I talked about the joint carols on 15 December.

Ryde club has Light Up East Ryde on 24 November from 3pm to 9pm and a Trivia Night on 29 February 2019.

Ride the Train is on again this year to raise money and awareness for the End Polio campaign – 24 October.

The next District Presidents’ Meeting is on 28 September and the next Zone Presidents’ meeting is on 31 October.

It was good night with the opportunity to get to know a couple of presidents I had never met.

Reasons 2020 District Conference  - 20-22 March

You and your partner are invited to attend the 2020 combined Rotary District 9685 & 9675 “Reasons” Conference.

The theme for Conference 2020 is Reasons and it gives Rotarians a chance to focus on questions like:

·        Why are we Rotarians?

·        Why did we become Rotarians?

·        What keeps us serving our communities?

The District Conference will be held in Wollongong at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre on Friday 20th March to Sunday 22nd March 2020 – a wonderful venue right on the beach: what more Reasons do you need to attend?

We have these inspirational speakers lined up and more in the pipeline:

  • Turia Pitt was burnt alive during an ultra marathon, humanitarian, Interplast Ambassador.
  • Kaye Green, the first Tasmanian exchange student to Japan in 1972, successful lithographer.
  • Rebecca Tolstory AM, Rotarian, founding Chair of Path of Hope
  • Rob Edwards, entertaining and inspiring motivational speaker.

All registrants will receive an invitation to attend free workshops/training seminars prior to the Conference on the Friday afternoon. We have also arranged with Wollongong Council for Rotarians to plant a tree in the Wollongong area on the same afternoon.

Saturday night’s dinner dance theme will be the Roaring Twenties. Come dressed as your favourite pin striped gangster or an incredibly glamorous flapper, musician, band or song. There will be prizes for the best dressed individuals and clubs.  Let your hair down, drag out your dancing shoes and let’s show Wollongong how we ROAR the Reasons why we are Rotarians.

We will be offering home hosting. What a great opportunity for you to meet and get to know a friendly Illawarra Rotarian.  Jim Christensen will be our home hosting coordinator, please contact Jim by email jimhaakon@hotmail.com if you wish to participate.

Please join me in celebrating Rotary Connecting the World with the wonderful work we do in Districts 9685 & 9675 at the Rotary Reasons 2020 District Conference

Looking forward to sharing the Reasons why we are Rotarians with you.
