Hello fellow Rotarians and friends,

I do hope you all enjoyed your extra little sleep-in last Friday as we had no meeting. There is no meeting this Friday morning either so take it easy again.

How does it feel to have that extra bit of freedom from our lockdown? Did you all get out for a little drive to enjoy the outdoors? Shortly we will be able to venture further to enjoy an escape from our current environment and go regional for that long-awaited holiday. That interstate and overseas holiday may even eventuate from next year! Let us hope this ‘opening up’ post COVID will keep progressing so we can enjoy a Christmas with our family and friends.

This is the last reminder for our social get together this Saturday morning, 30th October 2021, at Blenheim Park from 10:00am. It has been suggested we support the new Café, Giovette’s, in Blenheim Road shops, and bring along coffee and something to eat. They open for breakfast from about 6:30am.

I received an email during this week from a Mercedes Benz Car Club member. The email asked if our Club would be interested in providing a breakfast BBQ of egg and bacon rolls for an upcoming social get together at Lane Cove National Park as a fundraising event for our club.  If you are available on the 28 November 2021 to assist, please let Club Director, Garry know by email: Garry.maloney@hotmail.com. Thank you, Garry.

I also want to give everyone a reminder of the up-coming BBQ at the Gladesville Bunnings store on 13 November 2021. We are required to be double vaccinated and to wear face masks to meet the store's health and safety requirements. Please advise Garry of your vaccination status and availability for work on the day.

Remember that our Annual Celebration dinner is arranged for 3rd December 2021 at Basil’s Seafood Restaurant. This will be a fun night to meet up with our friends and others in our local area in a relaxed and casual place. Please let Garry know of your attendance and any guests you may be bringing with you if you have not already done so. For more information see here.

Another reminder that the Christmas Tree of Joy, at North Ryde Cox’s Road Mall, will go ahead in November and December. Pam has advised there are several of our local charities we support, that are keen to accept the donated gifts. Let us all get in the Christmas spirit and help in collecting the gifts at the tree, storing, sorting and delivering to the charities. Thanks for your work, Pam.

There have been two Christmas Carol planning meetings on site at T.G. Milner football fields on Vimeria Road, and the same on zoom recently with the involved parties. These meetings have been very positive, and everyone involved is very keen for the Christmas Carol event to proceed, to help the local community to return to a sense of a normal post COVID life. Another meeting is arranged for this Thursday evening, 28 October 2021 at the football oval club from 7:30pm. We will keep you informed of discussions and progress.

I am very grateful for all the hard work and commitment by everyone in our Club during these difficult times, thank you.

World polio eradication
World polio day on 24 October saw great optimism that polio can be eraducated.  There are only two wild polio virus cases currently identified in the world.  One each in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

A polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan has faced challenges in particular over the past two years — due to vaccine hesitancy and the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a five-month pause in polio immunization campaigns starting in March of 2020.

The Pakistani government reported earlier this month that its third vaccination campaign of the year in mid-September succeeded in the administering of polio drops to more than 40 million children across the country.

A house-to-house polio vaccination drive for all children under 5 in Afghanistan will restart on November 8 for the first time in more than three years, now that the conflict torn country’s new Taliban government has granted approval.

The fear is that with such a low case count complacency will arise. The low case numbers are partly due to restrictions on public movement to prevent COVID19 from spreading in Pakistan and as restrictions are wound back cases could rise.

Rotary’s Global Polio Eradication Initiative was founded in 1988. The program has since reduced infections by more than 99.9 percent worldwide and immunized nearly 3 billion children against polio, preventing more than 19.4 million cases of paralysis. But Rotary officials predict “hundreds of thousands of children could be paralyzed” if polio is not eradicated within 10 years.

It is not onlt the wild polio virus that must be considered. There are outbreaks of cVDPV type 2 (Vaccine induced polio), and to address them, a new polio vaccine that carries less risk of changing to a harmful form that could cause paralysis in low-immunity settings has been developed

We can't stop now!  Support End Polio Now.
