Hello everyone and welcome to this fortnight's bulletin. I am writing this whilst looking out on the beautiful ocean from Tuross Lakes. This time reminds me that we all need to take a break and enjoy family and relaxing.
Many of our club members have been busy with club matters. Garry Maloney and Rob Wilkinson have been very busy organising the end of year activities and, our list of interesting guest speakers that have agreed to come fill us in on what they do in their world. Thank you, gentleman, for your hard work.
It is going to be a very busy time rolling into Christmas. So please keep that enthusiasm going for all things the Rotary Club of North Ryde is planning.
The Macquarie Park Club have their Bingo and Raffle night fast approaching. Come on down and get your best BINGO voice going and enjoy some fun and fellowship. It is to be held at the Holy Spirit school hall in North Ryde on 14 October 2023, yes, the referendum voting day.
Saturday 21st October is the day we are travelling to Lithgow for the Landcare/Gro-Trees planting and picnic day. I have been given a flyer to be published in our bulletin, see here. Please try to come along and enjoy getting get know our trees we have planted and giving them a hug.
One of Rotary’s projects has been to eradicate free polio from the world. They are very close to doing just that, remarkably. World Polio Day is on Tuesday 24 October 2023. Donate or plan a train ride on the day.See here for more information.
This is also the day our exchange student, Currito changes host families. He will be going to the Colville family. My goodness I hope he can pack in time, with all the socialising he has been doing, and the gathering of mementos. I wish to thank the host family, the Sullivans, for taking such good care of Currito, and welcoming him into their family. They took Currito to Mudgee to meet his Aussie Grandma and had a wonderful time looking around the disused railways and historic sites of Mudgee. By all accounts, it was a wonderful time. May I remind all members of the club, if you have an event or family do on, to please invite Currito along so he can practise his English and get to know your family too.
On the weekend of 4th and 5th November, Sandeep has organised for the wonderful Michele Ellery to run a Mental Health First Aid Training weekend. It is a very scary field of medicine when it all goes wrong. Both for the patients and for the public. Come along and learn how to help others you may encounter that are facing mental health challenges. This is a first aid course, not a degree in psychology. Having the knowledge to guide someone to help is very important and a difficult topic, sometimes, to broach with that person. Sandeep has organised his office boardroom as the venue, thank you very much Sandeep. The space is limited to only 20 participants, so get in quickly.
Monday 6 November is the Rotary Foundation dinner at the Epping Club. Foundation is an important arm of Rotary; without it we could not do the immense work helping others who have faced disaster in the world. It is dear to our hearts in our club, and we regularly support and donate to Foundation. Please come along to what promises to be a wonderful night. The evening will be in the Grand Salon at the Epping Club 6:15pm for a 7:00pm start. The organising committee consists of Haran Ramacharandran, Neil McWhannell and DG Christine Owen. Go to the website to register - HERE.
Planning is underway for our end of year celebration Christmas dinner at the North Ryde Golf Club. . Garry Maloney will have details out to the club for your reply soon.

For the last several years, the Rotary Clubs of North Ryde, Chatswood/Roseville, Wahroonga, Pennant Hills and Turramurra have worked together in raising funds for a literacy program at Moree East Public School called “Books in Homes”. Nearly 90% of the students at the school come from the local Aboriginal community. The program has had a profound positive effect on the literacy skills of the students. The program provides “…quality books-of-choice to children living in remote, disadvantaged and low socio-economic circumstances, ensuring crucial early literacy engagement and the development of reading skills needed for lifelong achievement.” The Rotary Clubs in Moree are our local representatives.
One of the fund-raising activities has been the sale of delicious puddings from Pudding Lane. The Carols on the Common is a major fundraising event for both our club and Macquarie Park Rotary Club. It is also a wonderful community event for the Ryde area. It would be greatly appreciated to have as many volunteers to help as possible.
Sponsorship packages are still available. If any business would like to support this wonderful community event please send an email to Roseanna@rgmusic.com.au or mobile: 0418 692 410.
We do rely on sponsorship to put on this magnificent carols event. We look forward to your support.

End Polio Now Train Ride: Our dedicated Rotarians, Mark and Dave Anderson, will again embark on the End Polio Now Train Ride. For the past five years, they have tirelessly supported Rotary's number one priority to ensure that no child or parent suffers from the dreaded Polio virus. Please mark your calendars for October 23rd and 24th to join us in fundraising and demonstrating your support for this crucial cause. Together, we will end polio.
Representatives from the Rotary Club of Beecroft travel the entire Sydney train network in a single day - visiting 189 stations – in an effort to raise awareness and $1 million to END POLIO NOW. Each year on World Polio Day, father-son duo Mark and Dave Anderson, Rotary Club of Beecroft, head up the team travelling the Sydney Rail Network. Their journey typically begins in Sydney’s South, at 4.30 am and ends in Sydney’s North at 10.00 pm.
Mark and Dave work tirelessly in the preparation for this event, and on the day of the Train Ride. The date for this year is Tuesday, 24th October 2023.
