12 November 2021

Hello fellow Rotarians and friends,

Bernie and I are away for a short break and having a great time.  I recommend Yamba as a top spot.  This week's guest speaker is Lucette Harper, Manager from The Smith Family presenting to us about The Wonderful Work of The Smith Family.

What a great presentation we had last week from Mick Garnett CEO of Wheelchair Sports NSW.  He spoke about "Sport in a wheelchair".  It was very topical with Dylan Alcott announcing this week that he will retire after the Australian Open in 2020.

On 4 November we lit our Diwali lamp, so kindly given to us by Sandeep and Rajesh.  It is great to learn about other traditions and to be able to participate.

Don't forget to complete the member survey sent to you a couple of weeks ago.  This will help us plan our meetings for next year.

This Saturday, 13 November 2020,  we have a BBQ at the Gladesville Bunnings store. We are required to be double vaccinated and to wear face masks to meet the store's health and safety requirements. If you have not already done so, please advise Garry of your vaccination status and availability for work on the day.

Our Club has been asked to provide a breakfast BBQ of egg and bacon rolls for the Mercedes Benz Car Club upcoming social get together at Lane Cove National Park on the morning of Sunday, 28  November 2021. Please let Garry know your availability, email Garry.maloney@hotmail.com .  This is another opportunity to let the community see Rotary out in the community as well as raising a bit of money.

And the busy time continues!  Our Annual Celebration dinner is arranged for 3 December 2021 at Basil’s Seafood Restaurant. This will be a fun night to meet up with our friends and others in our local area in a relaxed and casual place. Please let Garry know of your attendance or not and any guests you may be bringing with you, as soon as possible for confirmation is required by the restaurant.

The Tree of Joy, at North Ryde Cox’s Road Mall is about to be launched .  Please consider helping to collect gifts and taking them to the storeroom.  Let Pam Wood know how you can help email woodmal50@hotmail.com

The Christmas Carols planning committee is working hard to organise this revamped event.  The logistics are quite different as this year it will be held on Sunday19 December at T.G. Milner football fields on Vimeria Road.  Watch this space as details unfold.

It has been a difficult time for us all during the pandemic and I am very grateful for all the hard work and commitment by everyone in our Club, thank you.

Captain Cook Graving Dock
Noel Phelan  – 16 Nov 2021

The construction of the dock was the second largest engineering project in Australia – larger than the Harbour Bridge. The Snowy Scheme was the largest. Ships were growing in size and the Sutherland dock at Cockatoo Island could not accommodate them. In 1938 the nearest large dock was the Royal Naval Base at Singapore – two weeks sailing away.

After investigating 16 sites around Australia, Garden Island was selected. The construction required the reclamation of 30 acres of land which resulted in Garden Island being joined to the mainland at Pott’s Point. The dock is 358 m long and can be divided into two sections. An enormous amount of infrastructure was needed to support the operation of the dock and work on the ships.

Come along and learn how a dock operates and how the dock was built during the war when equipment was very limited.
Noel Phelan's first career was as a science and mathematics teacher. He then moved into IT with IBM where he spent 25 years in various technical and management positions.  He has been a volunteer guide at the Maritime Museum for several years and enjoys showing visitors over HMAS Vampire, HMAS Advance, HMAS Onslow and First Lady. Noel is also the team leader for the museum speakers.

The meeting will be held at Piato Restaurant 123 Blues Point Road, McMahons Point at 7:00 am for 7:15 a.m. start. We finish promptly at 8:30 a.m.  At about 7:30 a.m., Noel will talk for about 30 minutes, followed by questions and breakfast is served during the talk.

Note - This meeting will be conducted within Covid19 social distancing guidelines. Hence, attendance will be limited, so please advise Ken Preshaw if you plan to attend by email kpreshaw@gmail.com or phone 0411 109 158.  The meeting will also be available via Zoom.

There will be a sausage sizzle with dessert trucks, Santa and loads of entertainment.

Garry will be in touch to organise volunteers for the night,
