Hello Fellow Rotarians and friends,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter.

What a big day it was last Saturday at the Bunnings BBQ. More than 1,100 sausage sandwiches were sold on the day. A huge thank you to everyone who helped on the day – Rob, Binoe, Mandy, Peter, Bernie, David, Jonathan as well as all the volunteers from The Riding for the Disabled Marsfield facility.

The Carols 2022 meeting will be held on Thursday 3 November 2022. This meeting is open for all club members to attend. The meeting will start at 7:30 PM at North Ryde RSL Sports Club with a dinner for those who are interested at 6:30 PM.

We will be starting the planning for the 2023 North Ryde eFun Run early this year. This is the second major fund raiser for the club. An initial meeting has been set up for Wednesday 23 November 2022 for everyone who has expressed an interest in helping with this project.

This Friday we are going to hear from Trisha Chari whose attendance at the last National Youth Science Forum was sponsored by our club. She is going to talk about her experience at this highly sought after event. Youth is a very important avenue of service for our club and it is always great to see young people commit themselves to their own development.

District Governor Mina Howard’s partner Larry has thrown out a challenge to all clubs. He wants clubs to design a hiking stick and bring it along to the Cowra Conference, 17-19 March 2023. The sticks can be decorated using any design or method limited only by your imagination. The attendees will be asked to vote for their favourite stick by putting in a minimum of a dollar donation per vote. The stick that raises the most money will win a Paul Harris Fellowship for their club to award to an outstanding member of their community. All entries must be available for sale to attendees. The club whose stick sells for the most money will also be eligible for a prize. All proceeds will be donated to Australian Rotary Health. Peter and Bernie Mason who will be attending the conference have a stick available for decoration. They are seeking your creative ideas and help.
A reminder regarding the Rotary International Convention which will be held in Melbourne from 27‑31 May 2023. It is not very often than an International Convention happens on our doorstep. For all the details, please click on this link: Melbourne | Rotary Convention

Australian Rotary charity, RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Services) has announced the creation of a national Flood Relief Appeal for people impacted by the current floods in the Eastern States. Australians impacted by the recent floods will be the beneficiaries of money raised by the Flood Appeal and will be able to liaise with their local Rotary Club to let us know what they need. Tax Deductible Donations to the appeal can be made on the Rotary Australia World Community Service website at rawcs.org.au.

I thank everyone in the Club for their commitment, energy and contribution towards making a difference.

The 2022-23 presidential theme logo was designed by renowned Australia-based Indigenous artist Riki Salam to represent RI President Jennifer Jones’ theme and initiatives. The logo represents key elements of Rotary while honouring the Indigenous culture:
  • The circle signifies connections to one another.
  • The dots around the circle represent people, one for each of our areas of focus.
  • The circle and the dots together become a navigation star, which signifies Rotary’s guiding light.
  • The solid line underneath signifies a digging stick used for hard work — a tool that Rotary’s people of action use to get things done.
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the country on which we meet, the Wallumattagal people of the Eora Nation. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Stories
ROMAC is seeking helpers
Rotary Australian Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) will be sponsoring two children in the near future for medical treatment.

Part of the role of ROMAC is to support the child and parent/guardian while they are here in Australia in addition to their medical treatment.

One is being operated on at Westmead Hospital, and the other is being operated on at Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick.

Roles of the helpers can include - meeting the child and family member at the airport; escorting them to their accommodation; taking them to appointments for medical assessments; taking the parent/guardian shopping for essentials (food, clothes, etc); ensuring they are taken to the airport on their departure.

This is such a rewarding role and if you would ber able to help, please contact PDG Harold Sharp at harold.gina@bigpond.com.

The Rotary Club of North Ryde has supported ROMAC for many years with three members holding major roles in ROMAC p PP Steve Perrin, PP Phil Isaacs and PP Rob Wilkinson.

North Sydney Sunrise - Savings Finder Program 8 November
The Savings Finder Service is a NSW Government initiative bringing more than 70 rebates and savings together in one convenient location. NSW customers can view, access and apply for over 70 rebates and savings online at www.service.nsw.gov.au
Nenita Hammer, Support Service Specialist of Service NSW North Sydney, will explain how you can save as the cost-of-living rises.  Few people are aware that there are more than 70 discounts and rebates available through the Savings Finder program, with a range of them specifically designed to assist seniors.

The Savings Finder tool via the Service NSW website makes it easy to see what help is available. You will be shown how to navigate the program online or make an appointment should you need more assistance with applying for these rebates.

Nenita from Service NSW North Sydney originally came from a travel background, having worked in the industry for over 20 years. The pandemic has changed all that, when travel was put on standstill. Service NSW gave her the opportunity to work in their Disaster Welfare Assistance Line, assisting Covid, Bushfires and Flood enquiries. She just recently completed a deployment to flood affected NSW Northern Rivers where she worked at several Disaster Recovery Centres in Northern NSW. She's now based in the Service NSW North Sydney office, where she conducts daily Savings Finder appointments.

The meeting will be held at Piato Restaurant 123 Blues Point Road, McMahons Point at 7:00 am for 7:15 a.m. start. We finish promptly at 8:30 a.m.  At about 7:30 a.m., Nerita will talk for about 30 minutes, followed by questions and breakfast is served during the talk
.
