At our Zoom meeting, on Friday 11 October, our guest speaker was Marie Cropp, the Community Engagement Officer for Escabags, who distribute Escape Bags for victims fleeing domestic and family abuse. They provide 2 variations of the bag, Parent and Child, and Single Adult.
Our Club Assembly last Friday morning, 18 Oct, at Dunmore Lang College was attended by some of the school Principals and representatives of the schools that we donate to each year. It was a pleasure to have Rob Francis, Principal of North Ryde Public School, Megan Gibbons, Principal of Smalls Road Primary School, Christine Manning, Deputy Principal of Ryde Secondary College attend the breakfast. They each spoke about what their school is doing and how they used the funds that we donate to them. We also had Steve Smith, the Relieving Principal of Marsden High School, attend. Marsden High has been involved with our Rotary club for some of our youth programs. The Rotary Youth Exchange student from Japan, that we will be co-sponsoring with the Rotary Club of Ryde from January next year, will be attending Marsden High School.
Unfortunately, the other schools that we support, Truscott Street Public School, Kent Road Public School, Ryde East Public School and Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School were unable to have a representative at the breakfast. Each of the schools have been presented with a Friend of Rotary and GroTree certificates in their schools’ name.
The funds raised from our Bunnings BBQ last Saturday 19 October, almost $2,000, will be donated to the End Polio Now campaign. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day, it was a somewhat slower day than usual, but still a good result for our fundraising campaign. Thank you also, to our sponsors and supporters - Ritchies IGA, Bush's Meats, Cox' Road Fruit Market, North Ryde RSL and of course Bunnings Gladesville.

For the last several years, the Rotary Clubs of North Ryde, Chatswood/Roseville, Wahroonga, Pennant Hills and Turramurra have worked together in raising funds for a literacy program at Moree East Public School called “Books in Homes”. Nearly 90% of the students at the school come from the local Aboriginal community. The program has had a profound positive effect on the literacy skills of the students. The program provides “…quality books-of-choice to children living in remote, disadvantaged and low socio-economic circumstances, ensuring crucial early literacy engagement and the development of reading skills needed for lifelong achievement.” The Rotary Clubs in Moree are our local representatives.
