President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

I hope you had  enjoyable holidays. On 17 th January we had an informal meeting at Seb's Cafe, 17 members attended.

Many thanks to Past President Pam Wood for her great efforts in preparing a review of our club BYLAWS which will discussed at our Board meeting on Friday January 31st. Once they have been finalised and approved by the Board they will be sent to all members for discussion at our Assembly on Friday  February 7th. I hope the proposals will be approved by mid March.

I attended Parramatta Toastmasters meeting on January 23 rd and gave their president a copy of Rotary Down Under, they set importance  on the development of members' skills in public speaking and listening timing speakers in minutes and seconds, cooperating with them would be useful.

Regards
Mak Khalil
President 2019-20

A Farewell and Thank You to Chairman Rob Wilkinson from ROMAC
The following article was taken from the January e-NEWS from ROMAC

The role of Chairman of ROMAC is a demanding, time consuming and often arduous one, involving overseeing the entire organisation, managing volunteers, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly, and ultimately ensuring the ROMAC patients and their carers receive the best possible treatment whilst they are in Australia or New Zealand.    And it's a three year commitment.

Rob Wilkinson's involvement with ROMAC spanned many years and culminated in his role as Chairman from 2016 until the AGM held in Christchurch in September 2019, when he handed the baton to incoming Chairman, Harold Sharp.

In appreciation of Rob's long and significant contribution to ROMAC, especially during his term as Chairman, and on behalf of the ROMAC Board, Harold presented him with a desk clock during a lunch at Mooney Mooney on the NSW Central Coast held just prior to Christmas.

Thanks, Rob for all you have done for ROMAC over the years!  Enjoy your retirement!

Communication Team

Members Recognised

ROMAC would not exist without the many volunteers who give freely of their expertise and time to enable the organisation to function effectively.

There are no paid staff on the ROMAC 'staff' register and everyone involved in running the organisation - from the Board, the support team, the doctors and hospital staff who identify and treat the patients, to the Rotarians who arrange transportation and hosting of the children and their carers during and following their surgery do so without remuneration - many incurring significants personal costs in the process.

The change of Chairman from Rob Wilkinson to Harold Sharp, which took place in September, created an ideal opportunity for ROMAC to acknowledge the significant contribution to the Organisation by a couple of Volunteers who have carried out duties in the Communications portfolio - including developing and distributing regular newsletters to supporters, managing the website and social media posts, and preparing the Annual Report.  Ann Burleigh and Maggie Alexander, who served under Rob for a number of years, were thanked by Rob and presented with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Board. Maggie is continuing to manage the ROMAC website. Thanks, Maggie!

ROMAC is extremely grateful to Maggie, Ann and Rob for their significant contribution.  Thank You!

Clean Up Australia Day
Sunday 1st March 2020 is Clean Up Australia Day and it would be great if our District can make a combined effort to get some litter and garbage out of the environment. Does your Club area have any hot spots where the stuff accumulates? If so, why not organise a club team to clean it up? It’s a great opportunity for some fellowship, public relations, engagement with the local community, and also do something good for the planet.

It’s really easy to organise:
1.Identify a Club champion who will act as the site supervisor.
2.Identify a suitable site – it can be a local shopping centre, park, oval, bushland. Anywhere where there is an accumulation of litter.
3.Register the site with Clean Up Australia at https://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/register-an-event
4.Decide on a meeting place and time
5.Organise a team of Club volunteers – from your Club, local schools, and  the community at large
6.Identify where you will leave the collected material and call your local Council to arrange for them to remove it after the event. Councils will do this for free, they just have to know about it.
7.Go and do it on 1st March!
8.After the event, complete the form Clean Up will supply with their kit and email/mail it back to them.

It would be a help if you can advise you team to bring the following with them:
  •          Hat
  •          Gloves
  •          Good shoes
  •          Drink
  •          Food
  •          Bags to collect litter in (these need to be sturdy, not flimsy garbage bin liners)
  •          Sunscreen if they are sensitive
  •          Sense of humour

Clean Up Australia will send you a kit before the event, but if you have a big team you will need more rubbish bags and gloves.

If you have nay questions, please call Ron Wainberg from the Wahroonga Rotary Club on 0418 427 481.

Good luck! Let’s see which Club can collect the most litter…….
