Dear Members and Friends,

The last couple of weeks have been a busy time for our club. On Saturday 5 April we had our Rotary District 9685 Assembly held at the Lindfield Learning Village. Peter Mason, Mandy Van, Pam Wood and I attended on behalf of our club. The District Assembly was an opportunity for learning and development of the incoming Board Members from our club.

On Sunday 6 April our eFun Run, to raise funds for youth mental health, kicked off with an historical walk around The Rocks. The tour was conducted, with commentary, by Bob Selinger OAM from our club. Thank you, Bob, for a very interesting and informative morning - and for the beautiful weather! See here for photos.

On Thursday 10 April a walk was organised in the afternoon, to help towards the kilometres people had set themselves for the eFun Run, starting at Kissing Point Park Putney. Unfortunately, only a few members, Bernie and Peter Mason, Bob Selinger, Pam Wood and I were able to do the walk. We were joined by Barbara Enright, the President of the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill. Rob Wilkinson joined in as part of his bike ride that day. See here for photos.

Then onto Friday 11 April when we had a special Youth Club Assembly held at Dunmore Lang College. It was a great opportunity to hear from the young people who participated in RYLA, RYPEN and the Pitch for Purpose competition this year. Dunmore Lang College Principal, Alasdair Murrie-West spoke to us about the college and the importance of the scholarship our club donates  every year. we then heard from Alexandra Fothergill, the recipient of the club's 2025 Dunmore Lang Scholarship. Alexandra is studying a double degree in arts and law at Macquarie University. After hearing from these amazing young people, we all felt that the future is in good hands. For more details, please see the report from our club Youth Director, Bernie Mason further on in this bulletin. For photos see here.

Saturday 12 April, Macquarie University Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre, which runs the Cool Kids program, collaborated with the Macquarie University Park Run group to raise funds and awareness of the programs the Centre provides. People could purchase dress up clothes, have their hair coloured or just donate. There were over 600 people at the park run. One of our members, Mandy Van, ran in the park run and we had volunteers, Bernie and Peter Mason selling dress up gear. Pam and I were on the course directing and cheering on the runners and walkers. It was great to see team from the Rotary Club of Macquarie Park participating in the Parkrun as part of their Challenge for the North Ryde eFun Run. For photos see here.

Sunday 13 of April, the last day of our eFun Run week, and for what seems to have now become a tradition, a dedicated, but small team walked a modified version of the 7 Bridges walk. Starting at Cunninghams Reach, Linley Point the group including Mandy and Ian Van, Peter Mason, Rob and Carolin Wilkinson, Pam Wood, Mei Yamamoto  and I headed off at 8am. Pam left us at Drummoyne, after the Gladesville Bridge (bridge 3) and Carolin, just after the Iron Cove Bridge (bridge 4).

The remaining group headed towards the city. Mandy, Ian and Mei left us after crossing the Pyrmont Bridge (bridge 6) as Mei was going to a concert at Sydney University that afternoon. Peter, Rob and I continued to cross the Harbour Bridge (bridge 7). I would like to thank Bernie Mason who drove to North Sydney to meet us for lunch and then drove us home, after a big morning. For photos see here.

At the time of writing we have raised over $9,000 from the eFun Run. Thank you to everyone who has supported this event.

April Youth Report
On the 5 April, our club hosted 26 people from our Youth Program participants and their parents, to come and tell us about their experiences, and what it means for them going forward.
Our Rotary Youth Exchange student, Mei Yamamoto, told us about her busy month, coping with her first assessments at school. Mei also told us of a great opportunity to go with Sue Rice and her family, and some exchange students, to Sue’s holiday house at Myall Lakes. Mei is not familiar with beaches and loved the experience.

Unfortunately, Erika Otero, had the flu and couldn’t attend to give us her story of RYLA. Perhaps another time. Our Summer RYPEN participants are both from Marsden High school. Brieanna Buckland led the girls in her story of her experiences, and I guess they need more raft building skills, so they don’t capsize again. Brieanna has faced her fears of speaking in public and has gone forward in her leadership roles at school. Even so far as being approached to join the public speaking group at school. Well done, Brieanna.  Tania, Brieanna’s mum, spoke to me of the difference in Brie’s approach to school, and life after attending RYPEN. Tania is truly grateful for the experiences given to her daughter. Tania wanted to thank our Rotary Club of North Ryde, for sponsoring Brieanna on this program. We also spoke of the opportunities afforded YEP, and Brieanna is very keen to learn more. I have referred them to Pam B, who has been in touch.

Kayla Mason, then went on to explain what RYPEN, and the whole experience has done to help her with her public speaking and confidence to step into unknown experiences. Kayla’s mum, Melinda and dad Richard, spoke to me of the ability Kayla now has, to step into experiences she never thought herself able, previously. They also expressed their deep gratitude to Rotary North Ryde, for giving Kayla, that experience and opportunity.

We then invited our year 9 students from Pitch for Purpose to come up. Each group had chosen an environmentally sustainable project, to fit the brief, our District Governor, Niranjan, had set for the participating teams. DG Niranjan, had asked for our support with one team. Ryde Rotary and Macquarie Park sponsored the other teams. They each introduced themselves and told us what project they had chosen.

Our club sponsored the team for Tap Tok. Arequipa Hansford and Ethan Diaz explained they had researched a tap device, that could be programmed, by an egg timer like control, for volume and time of water to be dispensed. It has a filter to keep water safe for drinking and cooking. The team that came 2nd in the project was the Sharknet project team. Olivia Hainzl and Tess Chang, told us about their model Sharknet, using pulse LED lights, on the top and bottom of the sharknets, to deter all marine life from getting caught in the nets. Especially the sharks and any other marine life, like turtles, and dolphins. Ruisha Vithanage and Aailya Chan, delivered us their pitch, about a revolutionary a Dual Pipe device. This device filters and removes rubbish from our water system, via a series of 2 pipes, each with different grade filters. They were judges the winners of the senior’s team.

Mandy and I are so pleased we can help with our Youth Projects to foster and grow our future leaders, and researchers, of the country. We are in capable hands.
Bernie and Mandy.
