In writing this bulletin from my bunker, I do hope you are all well and safe and have had a good week, whilst keeping yourselves isolated. I hope you are all doing your regular mental and physical exercises. It appears we have earned ourselves a few freedoms this week and we may get through this lock-down soon. Please look after yourselves and your loved ones.
We had a very lighthearted meeting on Friday morning last week, thanks to the visit from our District Governor Lindsay May and Tania. Garry introduced Lindsay to the 20 people in attendance to listen to Lindsay’s sailing stories including his numerous Sydney to Hobart adventures.
Lindsay started his sailing adventures at the front of the boat working with the sails and in later years was promoted to the back of the boat for navigation (and some cooking duties). Lindsay gave a brief history of the race which started after the 2nd World War in 1945 with a British navy crew challenging an Australian crew to a race over 628 nautical miles to Hobart. The British crew were the winners of this first race.
It would appear the boat ‘Love and War’ is his favorite boat as he has raced on this 8 times with the Handicap win in 2019. Sailing at the elite level is not for the feint hearted or those with shallow pockets, as Lindsay indicated a boat like ‘Wild Oats’ will set you back around $24million with another $4million per year to maintain.
We will have to watch the race this year – if it proceeds, COVID allowing – as Lindsay will be sailing on ‘Kialoa II’. We wish him good luck and safe sailing.

The Rotary Club of Chatswood Sunrise lives on as its Pudding fundraising of previous years is on again. This year, however, it is a joint project of the Rotary Clubs of North Ryde, Chatswood/Roseville, Wahroonga, Pennant Hills and Turramurra!
The puddings have won international prizes in previous years and include your traditional Christmas pud, macadamia and brandy, gluten free, date and toffee, rum and plum, mango and brandy and a variety of evil dark chocolate.
All proceeds will go to benefit the “Books in Homes” program at Moree East Public School, where over 80% of the students come from the Aboriginal community.
The program provides “…quality books-of-choice to children living in remote, disadvantaged and low socio-economic circumstances, ensuring crucial early literacy engagement and the development of reading skills needed for lifelong achievement.” The Rotary Clubs in Moree will be our local representatives.

As World Polio Day approaches, the Rotary community is getting ready to amplify our message about eradicating polio to protect the world’s children from this devastating disease.
Together, we’ve made tremendous progress. Now it’s time to intensify our fight to make polio the second human disease ever to be eradicated. Last year, the World Health Organization’s African region was certified free of wild poliovirus, showing that eradication is possible even in very difficult circumstances. The wild poliovirus remains endemic in just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. We can use World Polio Day to advocate for the support we need to end polio in countries where it still paralyzes children.
Inspire action Take action for World Polio Day by promoting the importance of polio eradication, raising funds, and planning events. Let’s engage our communities in the fight against polio — because as long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere.”
