16 May  2025

Dear Members and Friends,

Wishing all the mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday 11 May. I hope you all had a lovely day.

As I mentioned in the last club bulletin that late last year we were contacted by Ana Alves. Ana was a Rotary Youth Exchange student, from Brazil, who was here in 2017 and was sponsored by our club. Ana joined us, via Zoom, for our club meeting on Friday 2 May. Ana is now a qualified doctor and has recently joined the air force for her compulsory military service in Brazil. She has kept in contact with some of the people that she stayed with during her year in Australia. She has also had the opportunity to visit some of the other exchange students, from different countries, that she also met during her exchange year. Ana would like to come back to Australia in a couple of years and see us again.

The DIGIT week commenced with the arrival of the students on Sunday 11 May. There were four students from Forbes High School, Isabel, Dylan, Josiah and Lindsay; two from Ashford Central School, Stuart and Flynn; and two from McIntyre High School, Alex and Beauen. This was Beauen’s first visit to Sydney.

Thank you to the host families that the students stayed with for the week. Narelle Barker (1), Bruce Jacob and Louise Prentice (1), Peter Garrard and Janet Stacey (2), Brian and Sue Bailey (1), Peter and Bernie Mason (2), Mandy and Ian Van (1).

A big THANK YOU to David Martin for organising this week. A great deal of time and effort has gone into coordinating the students, their schools and families and the host families. David also organised the companies, universities and businesses that they visited throughout the week. These included Cochlear, North Ryde RSL Club, Rural Fire Service Olympic Park, the SAN Hospital, UTS Library, UTS Engineering Robotics, CISCO, IBM, Google, Microsoft, Macquarie University and Oracle.

David put together the timetable for the visits and coordinated the helpers that accompanied the students each day. It was a great experience for the students, and we had a wonderful farewell dinner at Riding for the Disabled, Marsfield on Thursday 15 May where the students gave a presentation about their week. The students departed for home early this morning, Friday 16 May.

We have the lunch coming up with the Chair of ROMAC Glenys Parton at the North Ryde RSL Club on Saturday 24 May starting at 12 noon.

Planning for this year’s Annual Celebration Dinner being held on Friday 27 June at the North Ryde RSL Club are well underway.  Please see the Invitation further on in this bulletin.

Our next club meeting will be a club assembly on Friday 23 May at Dunmore Lang College commencing 7.15 for 7.30a.m. start. Please let Peter Mason know as soon as possible if you will be attending email: masopete1956@gmail.com or mobile 0450730645. The next Board meeting will be on Friday 30 may via Zoom at 7.30a.m.

Our Exchange student Mei will be enjoying her birthday on Tuesday 27 May. We will be celebrating Mei's birthday together with the Rotary Club of Ryde's members on Friday evening 30 May at North Ryde RSL commencing 6pm. Please let Peter know if you will be attending

The 2025 Country Students DIGIT Week
This year the 2025 Country Students DIGIT week was held from Sunday 11 May until Friday 16 May. Eight students from Country NSW came by train to Sydney for the week of visits to IT Companies, universities and businesses. The students were hosted by members and friends from the Rotary Clubs of North Ryde and Epping.

Over the four days from Monday to Thursday the students visited Cochlear, North Ryde RSL Club, Rural Fire Service Olympic Park, SAN Hospital, UTS Library, UTS Engineering Robotics, CISCO, IBM, Google, Microsoft, Macquarie University and Oracle. Each day they were chaperoned by Peter Mason, assisted by Mandy Van, Brian Bailey and Garry Maloney. The students enjoyed laser tag and bowling at Strike Macquarie Centre and a variety of meals across the week at various locations with a final farewell dinner at Riding for the Disabled at Marsfield. Once again a fantastic project organised by David Martin with the assistance of the members of our club.
