President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

We enjoyed club member Shankar Sankaran's presentation of his travels at our breakfast meeting last Friday. He certainly made the trip on the Indian Pacific sound very relaxing and fun and the trip to Alaska for his son's wedding was also exciting. Shankar presented us with a new banner from Eagle River Rotary Club Alaska to add to our collection. I have included some photos of the presentation in photo albums.

It was also great to have Assistant Governor, Julie Thorpe visit our club on Friday in preparation for District Governor, Susan Wakefield's visit on Friday 2 November. Julie's club, the Rotary Club of Ryde are organising the Light Up East Ryde event this year. This will be held on Sunday 25 November from 3-8p.m. at Sager Place East Ryde. For more information about the event see the flyer below.

This week, on Tuesday morning, six  of our members joined the Rotary Club of Macquarie Park for their breakfast meeting at Riding for the Disabled (RDA) to hear about the incredible work they do for the community. Their premises are located at 118 Culloden Road Marsfield and is an impressive, welcoming facility. Warren Smith and other volunteers provided us with a delicious breakfast and a comprehensive overview of the wonderful work they do for young people with disabilities and their families.

We can support them by volunteering our time with gardening, maintenance, caring for the horses etc or by making a donation. For more information go to the website rdaryde.org.au or call 02 9868 2223.  I have also included some photos of RDA in the photo album section of this bulletin.

Our thanks to Trina Phillips, President of Macquarie Park Rotary Club for inviting us to attend. We have also been invited to attend the Melbourne Cup luncheon that Macquarie Park are organising on Tuesday 6 November. The invitation is included below.

This Friday will be a Club Assembly where we will be discussing our plans for the year and also reviewing the Fun Run. Don't forget to wear your hat for Hat Day in support of Lift the Lid on Mental Health.

We have organised Friday 23 November as the date for the Thank You breakfast for our Fun Run sponsors. Terry Davies from Australian Rotary Health will give a presentation about ARH at the meeting.

As there are five Fridays in November, we will not have a meeting on the Friday 9 November, which was originally planned to be the Thank You breakfast, but unfortunately the room was not available at Dunmore Lang College.

In this bulletin, our International Chairperson, Liane Corbett has provided us with some photos of ROMAC patient Maurine Kikisia and her mum, Ekila from the Solomon Islands and an update of her progress throughout the year. Liane is a wonderful support to the families and patients who come to Sydney through ROMAC and she regularly keeps us informed on the incredible work undertaken by the medical teams.

Over the past few weeks club members Pat Perrin and Barbara Lee have been very unwell. Pat has reassured me that she is recovering slowly and attending physiotherapy regularly is helping. Unfortunately Barbara has been admitted to hospital again this week and we send her every best wishes for a speedy and full recovery. We hope they both will be able to return to club meetings very soon.

Kind regards
Pam Wood

Let's celebrate Hat Day!
With 1 in 5 people experiencing a mental illness every year, it's very possible that you know someone who has had a tough time with their mental health.

It's now Mental Health Month and World Mental Health Day is Wednesday 10 October. That's when Australian Rotary Health will be celebrating Hat Day to #LiftTheLid on Mental Illness.

100% of funds raised will go towards vital mental health research at universities across Australia.

ROMAC Patient Mourine

Mourine and her mother Ekila are leaving to return to the Solomon Islands after a very long stay at Ronald Mc Donald as all the treatments including operation,  radiation, speech therapy were done  in the Children’s hospital in Randwick. As always we had a wonderful team of Doctors looking after our ROMAC patient.

Both were assisted by a number of volunteers to ensure  that their stay would be as pleasant as possible ; they have been away from their family since February .

I think that we all have grown very fond of both Mourine and her mother Ekila.  Our best wishes go to Mourine  who will need to catch up on her studies after years of not attending school due to her appearance.

Best regards

A Request for help from the Rotaract Club of Macquarie -Ryde

Earlier this year we de-affiliated from Macquarie University and became a community club, a big change for us. One of the major changes we've had becoming a community club is of course moving away from Macquarie University. As such, we have been looking out for a new meeting place somewhere around the Macquarie Park area.

We'd like to ask your Rotary club if there is anyone in your club who lives or works in the Macquarie Park area and has ideas for, or access to, possible meeting spaces, such as conference rooms, office spaces etc. which our club could use for our fortnightly meeting.

Ideally they would be accessible by public transport and could be used between 6:30-8pm every second Tuesday night.

As I said, even ideas for possible spaces helps a lot in our mission to regrow our club!

Please let me know if anyone has any information, either by messaging our public page, or by contacting me directly at sclong17@gmail.com.

Thanks in advance,
Stephanie

Drought Relief Update

Rotarian Barry Edmundson, District Drought Appeal Co-ordinator gave a comprehensive report to the recent Presidents meeting regarding the district’s response to the drought appeal.

At the recent Australia and NZ Conference the District Governors from the drought affected regions were extremely grateful for the support of the rest of Australia. The support both monetary and physical is much appreciated by all those people living through this terrible time.

Many clubs around the district are still raising funds in a wide variety of ways ranging from Theatre nights to the old-fashioned bucket drops. The Channel Nine appeal has been closed off to donations after reaching just over $10 Million. The disbursement of those funds has begun. A full list of those disbursements can be found on the Channel Nine website about $4 million has been sent to the various organisations involved in drought relief including many rotary districts and projects.

While the Channel Nine RAWCS account has closed there are still RAWCS accounts open and receiving money for the drought relief. Please check the RAWCS website if you wish to donate money into one of those accounts.

Many many clubs are liaising directly with clubs and districts in the rural areas and I encourage you to continue to do that but please let Barry Edmundson know what your plans are.

At the recent President’s meeting a short YouTube clip was shown called “Adopt A Town”. This is an initiative from the Rotary Club of Caringbah, your club might like to take a look.

Thank You to all those Rotarians and clubs that are supporting the drought relief, your hard work is truly appreciated.
