President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

What an incredible week it has been! The second seminar on youth mental health was held on Wednesday evening at the Hearing Hub, Macquarie University. Approximately 50 people attended and found the presentation by Dr Carolyn Schniering about the nature and treatment of adolescent depression interesting and very helpful. Thank you to Rob Wilkinson, Brian Powell, Annette Billington and Garry Maloney for helping with the registration, afternoon tea  and selling of raffle tickets.

Our meeting on Friday morning was busy filling the goodie bags for the Fun Run. It was great to have many hands there to complete the task efficiently and quickly. Thank you to everyone who came along and helped and to Pam Bennett who sourced so many goodies for the bags.

We were able to have a quick presentation from Elizabeth Convery and Ingrid Yeend from the National Acoustic Laboratory seeking volunteers to help with research. Elizabeth Convery is seeking adult volunteers to trial the Resound Linx 3D hearing aide and the Resound Smart 3D app. if you are interested ring 9412 6889 or email elizabeth.convery@nal.gov.au. Ingrid Yeend is seeking adults 40-80 years for a lab study evaluating a new speech enhancement hearing aid feature. You can contact her at ingrid.yeend@nal.gov.au.

Saturday morning Garry and Brian helped sell raffle tickets at Cox's Road Mall and our 1st prize winer was sold the lucky ticket at Seb's Cafe! Thank you to both Garry and Brian for giving up their morning selling nearly 10 books of tickets. Our treasurer Sandeep Rathi collated all the registrations and prepared the bibs for the runners when registrations closed at midday.

Sunday morning came around and the skies looked quite threatening. However we were very fortunate that there was only light rain and we were able to go ahead with the Fun Run. There were so many wonderful volunteers who came along to make the event a success. On my last count we had 53 volunteers including the students from Epping Boys High School and their musicians.

I would like to extend my thanks to all our volunteers:
  • Our club members, their family and friends who have helped support the Fun Run in the lead up to the event and on the day.
  • The members of the Rotary Clubs of Ryde Julie and Stephen Thorp, John Dodds; Macquarie Park Trina Phillips,  Leo Driessen and Eastwood/ Gladesville Mano Arumanayagam, Narelle Barker, Kevin Lance and Mark Rosenberg.
  • Stephen Sim who was MC for the day and helped create a great atmosphere and kept the day on track.
  • Sports Star Ambassador Michael Wells from the Waratahs and John Alexander OAM MP  who opened the event and supported the Fun Run throughout the morning.
  • The club committee Victoria Crawford, David Martin, Sandeep Rathi, Garry Maloney, Shankar Sankaran, Jane Meney, Mandy Van, Liane Corbett, Asim Khawaja  and Annette Billington who worked so hard behind the scenes and in the lead up over many months and the University Representative Committee members who also supported the club committee in planning and promoting the Fun Run.
  • Paul Williamson from Macquarie Park who has helped us with the website and technical issues relating to the IT infrastructure.
  • Jane Meney and the students from Epping Boys High School and their musical friends who entertained us throughout the morning.
  • Megan Pope from the Centre for Emotional Health.
  • Rado Gatchallan, Jen and James Nowiczewski
Finally I would like to thank our sponsors  (see below)who provided  support either financially or in kind. Without their support we would not have been able to have the Fun Run.

Whilst we were down on numbers due to the weather, the feedback was that it was a really fun day and the participants enjoyed themselves. We hope to have the final amount of funds raised determined soon once all income and expenditure is reconciled.

The Rotary Club of Eastwood/ Gladesville will be holding a Trivia night on Saturday 15 September (see  story below or  flyer here). We were fortunate to have 5 members of their club help us with the Fun Run. Barbara Lee has booked a table for our club. Please let her know if you can attend and support our fellow Rotarians with their fundraising project.

There is no club meeting this week as it is a Board meeting. There is a social night planned with dinner at Kasalong Thai restaurant. Please let David Martin know if you are attending. Unfortunately Garry and I are heading north for 12 days on Friday for a break and won't be able to come. We will also miss our exchange student Helmiina's presentation at the  Club meeting the following Friday 7 September. We will have to have a catch up  when we return!

Kind regards
Pam Wood
