President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

The Fun Run Thank You Breakfast  was held last Friday and we were delighted to welcome and thank 10 of our sponsors and supporters at the breakfast. It was a pleasure to present Terry Davies  Corporate Manager, Australian Rotary Health with a cheque for $4000 to support research into mental health. We also were able to present Professor Jennie Hudson Director, the Centre for Emotional Health with a cheques for $2000 to support the Cool Kids Program. Both Terry and Jennie provided us with  insight into the work both ARH and CEH undertake to support mental health and we look forward to continuing the relationship between these organisations and the Rotary Club of North Ryde . See photos below and also in the photos album section of this bulletin.

The remaining funds raised through the Fun Run will go towards supporting the candidates for the Youth leadership programs RYLA, RYPEN and a MUNA team from Ryde Secondary College.

We also have set aside an amount to go towards the setting up of the 2019 Fun Run. I have booked a tentative date for Sunday 25 August, so please mark this one in your diary and keep it free! I have sent out a survey to members about the Fun Run for feedback through survey monkey. At the moment I have had only 3 surveys completed and returned, please take the time to complete the survey as it will help us in our planning for next year's event.

The support for the Tree of Joy at Cox's Road Mall continues to be very impressive. Thanks to the tireless work and commitment from Pat Perrin and Annette Billington. Unfortunately Pat has been unwell and back in hospital again this week. Victoria Crawford, Annette, Garry and I will continue collecting the gifts from the Tree whilst Pat is unwell. We send her  our best wishes for a speedy recovery and hope she will be back to good health very soon.

Garry and I attended the District 9675/9685 Foundation dinner on Monday evening at Waterview Restaurant, Sydney Olympic Park. Past Rotary International President Ian Risely was an inspirational guest speaker at the dinner. We were reminded of the wonderful work the Rotary Foundation enables Rotarians around the world to achieve. Each Rotarian is asked to consider becoming a centurion by donating $100 each year to Foundation.

Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Ryde on a very successful Light Up East Ryde on Sunday afternoon/evening. ADG Julie Thorp was delighted with the response from stall holders and the community.

The Carols on the Common are only a little over two weeks away now. Planning is in full swing and volunteers will be called for soon to assist on the evening. Please keep Sunday 16 December are to come along  and enjoy a wonderful family event. For information about the Carols go to www.carolsonthecommon.org.au

We are looking forward to the club Christmas party this Friday 30 November at North Ryde RSL, 6.30 for 7p.m. Thank you to David and Garry for organising the evening.

A reminder also that the  North Ryde Community Aid Christmas party will be held on  Thursday 6 December  from 10a.m. to 2p.m at  Cutler Parade North Ryde. If you are able to assist with setting up and/or serving and cleaning up, please contact Victoria Crawford.

This Friday is a Board meeting, there is no club meeting this week. All members are welcome to attend the Board meetings. We are looking for at least two new Board members for 2019-20 and a President-elect. Please consider taking up a position on the Board for the next Rotary year. For newer members it is a great way of learning more about the big picture of Rotary as well as having a better understanding of the work our Club undertakes in the community each year.

Kind regards
Pam Wood
President 2018-19

ROMAC Patients update from Liane Corbett

This is Verzinette Peter  currently recovering from the open heart surgery
in Westmead Children hospital .
The surgery was very successful and as the heart valve could be repaired she
will have a normal life;
Verzi as we call her is from the Solomon Island. Her Aunt Vedna is with her
and once discharged the recovery will take place in the Ronald Mc Donald
lodging near the Westmead hospital.

This is Lisa Malilibacrin when we had the last check up last Friday.
Her story is one of frustration as this operation should have been done 4
years ago but the  financial assistance to go to New Zealand wasn't
forthcoming.
Lisa was discovered by an Australian Doctor, Dr Brooks when she went to give
medical assistance in Vanuatu and spoke with Rotary who advised ROMAC. Lisa
did come over last February. Now, this big operation was done to correct her
spine. It was done in one operation and that pleased the doctors as they had
the thought that a second one may be needed. Fortunately it wasn't
necessary.
Lisa is recovering slowly as her body is undergoing major changes as the
pressure points have changed. She can now breath better.
Dr Brooks is looking after Lisa and her mother and hopefully can go home in
a couple of weeks.

This is the first picture  concerning before and after Lisa Malilibacrin 's
operation.
