President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,
Last Friday Juliet's cousin Lily Shi talked to club members about her life, work and black holes. From what I have heard, Lily has had a very impressive and interesting life and we appreciate her giving her time to our club whilst she is visiting from the US. Thank you to Juliet for arranging the opportunity for Lily to come to the meeting. My thanks again to Brian Powell for stepping in at the last moment to chair the meeting for me.
With only a little over two weeks to go before our Annual  Changeover Dinner, planning is well under way to celebrate another very successful Rotary year for our club. We will be making some presentations to the Community groups we support each year including North Ryde Community Aid and New Horizons. We will also have an opportunity to say thank you to the outgoing Board members who have worked tirelessly throughout the year and to welcome in the new Board members.
Outgoing Board members, Liane Corbett and Terrie McConnell will also be leaving the club. Both Liane and Terrie have been very supportive, valuable members of the Board and will be missed greatly. We wish them both all the very best for the future and hope they both stay in touch as friends of the club.
We will also be making special presentations of Paul Harris Fellow awards and Community service awards at the dinner. We hope many of our supporters and fellow Rotarians along with their families and friends can attend and help us celebrate.
The Annual Celebration dinner is on Friday 28 June at Basil's Seafood Restaurant Marsfield see invitation here. Bookings can be made by contacting me by email: mobile: 0400803417 or  Pat Perrin, email or ph: 9887 1538. Payment can be made to Bendigo Bank North Ryde BSB 633 000 Acct # 126363670. Please reference "Changeover Dinner" and your name.
Pat Perrin is organising the famous Changeover Dinner Raffle again this year. If you have any Christmas, birthday or other gifts you would like to donate for the raffle or a bottle of wine or two please bring along to the meeting this Friday or contact Pat or myself. We need the gifts for wrapping by Friday 21 June.
This Friday we look forward to hearing all about  Helmiina's year on exchange in Australia.  It is hard to believe that Helmiina has been with us for a year, it has flown past! We will have a special farewell dinner for Helmiina this Friday evening at Fourno Italian Restaurant at 56 Delhi Road, North Ryde.  Start time is 6.30pm. Please let David Martinknow if you would like to attend,  mobile 0414642948.
Kind regards
Pam Wood

Polio Update
Following news of two further wild polio virus cases in Pakistan, I am pleased to forward the following in depth Polio campaign comments from three of our outstanding international leaders and commentators – including inspirational words and encouragement from Bill Gates.
We now have 24 confirmed cases of polio this year – seven in Afghanistan and 17 in Pakistan – all as a result of the ongoing hostilities along the border between the two countries.
When you read the attachments, you will really understand the difficulty of the situation and the bravery of our volunteers.
Bill Gates leaves no doubt on the absolute vital nature of ongoing support from Rotary – along with his commitment.
So please focus on encouraging end of year support from your Rotary clubs.  Let’s ensure a high percentage of clubs honour the request from RI President Barry Rassin for clubs to contribute $1,500 each in a special ‘one off’ donation this year.
I am pleased to provide the information contained in the attachments.  I believe the three pieces provide ALL the answers and I urge you to share with your Rotary clubs – and suggest they publish same in their club newsletters over a three week period.
