President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

Our meeting was jam-packed last Friday. We welcomed special guests Abby Ottowill and her dad Mark; and Josh Nowiczewski and his parents Jen and James. The meeting began with Abby sharing her experience of the RYPEN weekend she attended in February.
Along with making new friends, Abby enjoyed the challenging activities and learnt about leadership.

Josh Nowiczewski gave a presentation on his year exchange in Finland which sounded amazing! Josh's stories and photos gave us a great insight into the wonderful experience that Rotary Youth Exchange provides. We were very spoiled with some delicious Finnish dessert that Josh's mum, Jen had baked for us! I hope I have the correct name and spelling of the dish in the photos below. Thank you Abby, Josh and Jen for a very enjoyable morning.

Another highlight of the meeting was to induct Bernie Mason as a new member to our Rotary club.  We also had planned to induct Bernie's husband Peter, but he was unable to attend on Friday. Peter will be inducted as a member in early May,  when they return from their holiday. We are delighted to welcome Bernie and Peter into our club and we look forward to working together to continue to make a difference in our community.

Following such a positive and uplifting meeting we were shocked and saddened to hear the news from Christchurch. I have received an email from District Governor Susan Wakefield regarding an appeal that has been set up by three Rotary clubs in Christchurch to support the victims of the terror attack. I have included the details in this bulletin for anyone who may wish to make a donation directly. I will raise the appeal at the Board meeting on Friday.

Support for the Victims of the Christchurch Terror Attack

Following the tragedy in Christchurch on Friday, below is an email from PRID Noel Trevaskis with details on to support the local Rotary clubs support the victims of this attack.

From Noel:

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Please see an email from the three Rotary Club Presidents in Christchurch regarding the recent terror attack in their city of Christchurch.

The senseless and cruel act on Friday in Christchurch is something that is beyond comprehension. Rotary is about building communities not tearing them down, Rotary is about caring for people, Rotary is about supporting people and communities in their time of distress and need.

Please consider supporting the appeal detailed below by the Presidents of the three Rotary Clubs in Christchurch.

Regards,

Noel Trevaskis

From the Club Presidents......

There are no words to sufficiently express the enormous sense of sadness and outrage regarding Friday's events and the immense impact this has had on the local Muslim communities in the areas of the Riccarton, Linwood-Woolston and Ferrymead clubs and on our wider community as a whole.

At an appropriate time in the near future we will seek to make contact directly with local leaders in the Muslim community to see how Rotarians can offer further support.
In the meantime, we can act now by making a significant donation to a Rotary fund that has been set up to support the victims of this devastating attack.

The account number for the fund being managed by the Riccarton club is:

03 0823 0350538 00
Reference: Mosque Appeal
We also condemn in the strongest terms the base values and attitudes directed towards our migrant community who have just as many rights as we all do to live life free from violence and prejudice. Those values are a complete anathema to the values of Rotary.
Please support this appeal generously by making a donation to the account below.

Yours in Rotary

Shane Murdoch- President, Riccarton

Theresa Shaugnessy-President, Linwood/Woolston

Barbara Crooks- President, Ferrymead

20 March is the International Day of Happiness. A message from the Rotary Club of Lower Blue Moutains
March 20 is International Day of Happiness, something that is now more important than ever to find joy, and happiness but also find common ground rather than divisions. A happy, unified world is a strong one, and a goal that all Rotarians share.
