President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

Our guest speaker at last Friday's meeting was Professor Gavin Marx, Director San Clinical Trials Unit and Clinical Director San Integrated Cancer Centre. Professor Marx spoke to us about the research into different types of cancer, clinical trials and treatments that are now available for patients. It was interesting to hear that the treatment for each person can now be quite individualised and specific to the patient.  It is inspiring and reassuring to know that there are such dedicated professionals working tirelessly to improve outcomes for patients suffering from cancer.

Our guest speaker this week will be Stephanie Long from Macquarie-Ryde Rotaract. Stephanie will be discussing the RYLA week she attended earlier this year.

Garry and I joined Pam and Tom Bennett at the welcome home dinner for Exchange students at Muirfield Golf Club last Friday evening. It was quite a challenge to get there in the storm, but a very uplifting evening once we all dried out! Three of the returning exchange students spoke about their experiences on their 12 month exchange and our visiting exchange student, Helmiina spoke on behalf of the inbound students.

Josh Nowiczewski and his parents Jen and John were very delighted with the opportunity for Josh to travel to Finland and the amazing experiences that brought him. Josh will be giving a presentation about his exchange at our Club breakfast meeting  on Friday 15 March. I have included photos of the dinner in this bulletin.

Our upcoming Trivia Night on Saturday 23 February at the Clive Austin Conference Centre, Royal Rehab aims to raise fund for the exchange program which enables us to send a student overseas and to host a student here for the 12 months. Preparations are underway and bookings are coming in, we still have plenty of room for more tables of 8 to 10 players so if you haven't done so yet, get your team together and come along for a fun night. Thank you to members who have donated prizes and bottles of wine for the night. We still need a few more so if you  have something you would like to donate, please bring it to the next meeting or contact me on mobile: 0400803417 to arrange collection.

The Book stall is also just over a month way now. We will be organising a collection day prior to the stall on Saturday 23 March, so keep collecting good quality books, paper bags , CDs and DVD's. If you do not have any space to store them until the collection day, contact Victoria Crawford,  David Martin or myself.

The Carols Sponsors Thank You Breakfast will be held on Friday 1 March at Dunmore Lang College. The Carols on the Common is a fabulous annual community event which would not be possible without the generosity of the sponsors.

I have just received news that the date for District Changeover has been changed to Saturday 6 July commencing 6.00p.m. for 6.30p.m. at Hornsby RSL, 4 High St., Hornsby

Kind regards

2019 Country IT Student's Visit Volunteer Helpers Required

Another year rolls round for our greatly valued club project of the IT students visit to Sydney.  We are aiming for 8 students again, with 4 being sourced from the Inverell region in the north and 4 from the West Wyalong and Forbes area in the west.

We are proposing to have the project a week later this year to try and coincide with the Vivid festival in Sydney.  At this stage the students would arrive on the afternoon/evening of Sunday 26th May and leave on the morning of Friday 31st May.

I am even earlier again this year, starting the job allocation process.  Once again, I have listed the jobs that need to be done below and would ask you to email me with the ones you would like to help with.  It is understood that with work, family and other commitments a number of jobs are not possible for a number of members and there is no pressure to do anything you do not want to do.  As you know it is generally a fun week and the kids are amazing, so definitely worth being involved if you can.

We can have up to 8 students, but it could be less.

  1. Pick up from Hornsby station about 4pm and deliver to host parents.
  2. Pick up from Strathfield Train Station usually about 7 or 8pm.
  3. Hosting students (specify 1 or 2 and whether male or female preferred).
  4. Students would be fed and looked after at hosts homes on Sunday and Monday nights at this stage.
  5. Driving students and attending company visits on Monday.  Possibly 4 passengers.  Let me know if a half day is possible rather than a full day.  We need two people each day
  6. Attending company visits with students on Tuesday and Wednesday.  No driving needed as the train will be used.  Half day also possible.
  7. Driving students and attending company visits on Thursday.  Possibly 4 passengers.  Let me know if a half day is possible rather than a full day.  This is generally a local day, so there may be some driving and some walking.
  8. On Tuesday night we propose taking the students into Sydney to see the Vivid festival.  We would have tea somewhere and then a wander round the Vivid hotspots in the city.  We would need 2 or 3 people to oversee this.
  9. On Wednesday night we propose taking the students out for tea in Macquarie Centre and then go to Bowling and Laser Tag.  We would need 2 or 3 people to oversee this
  10. On Thursday night we will have dinner and presentations at a venue yet to be decided.  We will sort out attendance closer to the time.
  11. Return students to Hornsby and Strathfield stations around 10am and 7am respectively.

I hope I have covered everything here.  Some people have indicated they are happy to organise the same areas as they have in the past and they will be given priority.  Please let me know what you would like to be involved in and what your availability is and I will come up with a jobs roster at some stage

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

David

Whether it is for your own club project or not, assisting at HEERA is a great way of fulfilling Club International Service ideals. By your efforts a disadvantage person or community somewhere in the world will benefit with higher health or educational advantages.

6 Great Reasons to do RLI

The Rotary Leadership Institute is successful because it delivers skills and knowledge that Rotarians can apply straight away in their clubs.  It (1) hones leadership skills, (2) builds Rotary knowledge, (3) gives a perspective about where Rotary has been and where it is now, and (4) shares a vision of what Rotary can be.  This is all done while (5) networking with Rotarians from other clubs and (6) providing opportunities for partnering in service.

The two part course is held on a weekend or separately on Saturdays or Sundays to meet demand. Morning tea and lunch are provided.  Each day starts at 8:00am and finishes around 4.00pm.  The cost is $75 and we encourage Clubs to pay for their members attending.

Courses 50, 51 and 52 are open for registration:

RLI 50 runs over the weekend 2-3 March at the District Office, Thornleigh.

RLI 51 runs Saturday 4th and 18th of May at the District Office, Thornleigh.

RLI 52 runs over the weekend of 1-2 June at a location to be decided in the Penrith/Lower Mountains area.
