President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

Last Friday we welcomed DG Kalma McLellan, ADG Julie Thorp, Rotarian (Rtn) Geoff Brennan of Ryde Rotary Club (RC) as well as our great travellers President Elect Mandy Van,Past President Victoria Crawford and Peter and Bernie Masom.

DG Kalma handed me a certificate of appreciation for our club contribution in eradicating Polio. Ours was one of 24 certificates. She also raised a few issues including the importance of attending Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training courses; speaking to local tradesmen and others about Rotary and inviting them to meetings. She also spoke about the
importance of identifying ourselves with shirts with Rotary logo or other Rotary products when we go shopping.

Rtn, Geoff Brennan recommended attending the REASONS Conference in Wollongong on 20-22 March 2020 as it will have important speakers.

Rtn Garry Maloney updated us on the hectic preparations for the Christmas Carols on the Common on 15 December, thanks to the work of the dedicated team from Macquarie Park RC. and our club.

Past President Pat Perrin spoke about the Tree of Joy now in Coxs Road Mall. Gifts will be distributed to some of the charities on Giveaway Day, Saturday 14 December. Gifts received will be given to the usual charities including North Ryde Community Aid and Information Centre Inc, Macquarie Hospital, New Horizons Nursing Home, The Smith Family and St Vincent De Paul Society.

Past President Pam Bennett spoke about youth selection for RYLA and RYPEN.

Past President Rob Wilkinson co-hosted North Ryde Community Aid  (NRCA) 40th anniversary celebration at North  Ryde RSL on 18 November. He spoke about it at our meeting and the merger of NRCA with Presbyterian Aged Care while keeping its staff and activities. Past Presidents Pat Perrin and Liane Corbett, Rtn Annette Billington and myself attended the celebration.

North Ryde Rotarians at Golf Day, Concord Thursday 21 November 2019

Garry and I played in a Rotary Golf Day last Thursday, at Concord Golf Club, put on by the Rotary Club of Five Dock. We were joined by Garry’s neighbour and mate Barry Weir (on the right), and my friend and former President at North Ryde RSL Barry Herbert, (on left).

ROMAC was one of the two recipients of proceeds from the day. RC Five Dock has long been a strong supporter of ROMAC, and with funds raised from the participants and a raffle and auction at the evening dinner, I am sure that both ROMAC and the Children’s Tumour Foundation will each receive a significant donation.

Cheers,
Rob

The 27th Carols on the Common – Carols in North Ryde
The 27th Carols on the Common – Carols in North Ryde
Join us for a local event at Sydney's second largest Christmas Carols in the heart of Ryde.
The 27th annual Carols on the Common kicks off on SUNDAY 15 DECEMBER at 5:30 pm with live entertainment and Carols begin at 8 pm. The night ends with a firework display at 9:15 pm.
Don’t forget to bring a picnic blanket and some nibbles. Food will also be sold by a range of vendors on the night. Rides and other amusements will be available from 5:00 pm onwards. It's best to bring cash, as cards may not always be accepted.
Visitors are asked to bring a reusable water bottle and to take their rubbish home at the end of the night. Water refill stations will be located around the event as there will be no bottled water sold.
Money raised on the night goes to worthy causes such as ROMAC - an organisation bringing sick and ill children from nations all over the world for life changing surgery in Australia. This year’s Carols on the Common will feature a moment of silence and bucket collection for the victims.

A Thank You from RDA

Dear Mak and the Rotary Club of North Ryde,
Thank you for the very generous donation to RDA Ryde following the combined breakfast meeting held on 15th October.

I am pleased to tell you the new mounting platform is now fully part of our therapy sessions and in full use making it safer and more comfortable for our riders, volunteers and horses. It is like is was always there and we find it hard to remember the old layout.

Your donation will help with feeding our horses as the ongoing drought has increased our feed costs 122% over the last year. Being the only city based RDA Ryde we bring in all our feed so has increased costs nearly $20,000pa. Your donation helps and knowing the support you have for RDA Ryde inspires us immensely.

Thank you.

Best wishes
Warren Smith
Disaster Support

With fires on top of drought, our northern neighbours are really struggling. If you and/or your club are in a position to support, there have now been a number of RAWCS accounts set up to manage your donations:

The projects are:
Please talk to Community Service Director Peter Kirkwood if you have any plans to support our bush cousins so that a coordinated approach can be taken. And thank you all so much for what you have already provided to so many across our state.

In case you are wondering if Shelterbox can or are supporting this disaster, ROWLEY TOMPSETT, Chair, ShelterBox Australia provides the following input to your questions:
“It’s been devastating to see the rapid spread of bushfires in Australia. Thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes, and the country is bracing itself for ‘the most dangerous bushfire week ever seen’.  Our thoughts are with all those affected, including our colleagues at ShelterBox Australia.
At this time, we’re not sending a team to provide shelter aid. We’re monitoring the situation closely and will provide an update if anything changes.
  • While New South Wales and Queensland have both declared a state of emergency, the Australian Government has not made an international request for emergency shelter.  Core infrastructure, like power, communications, roads, hospitals and schools, is likely to be repaired quickly compared to other countries.
  • Our core items – including tents, tools and tarpaulins – are unlikely to be an acceptable solution for Australian families, particularly with temperatures of 40C expected.
  • Local teams already have good capacity to respond and start the recovery process.  This is due to the high-quality infrastructure, social support, availability of resources, and the preparedness activities of Government teams.”
