Dear  Club Members and Friends,

Last Friday our guest speaker French Scientist Dr Johan Pansu of CSIRO, Lucas Heights felt at home with our visiting Past President(PP) Liane Corbett and our French exchange student Palmyre greeting him in French.

Dr Pansu gave an informative presentation on "New approaches for biodiversity and environmental management", he displayed charts on environmental issues and spoke -among other matters-on the disappearance of large predators except the lions, the competition by species for feed and the human effect on biodiversity and soil.

PP Pat Perrin asked members to donate items for our Changeover raffle on 26 June, dinner will be at Basil's Seafood Restaurant.

Thanks to my fellow Rotarians for surprising me by celebrating my birthday, thanks to Treasurer Sandeep Rathi and his bright daughter for finalising our Membership Drive invitation of 3 April and to PP Victoria Crawford for drafting the invitation.

Next Friday we'll vote on our reviewed Club Constitution and By-Laws and hear from President Elect Mandy Van on her trip to Vietnam. Guests are welcome.

"According to 2014 statistics, Australia spent less on Research  & Development than any of the Scandinavian countries"
I believe it is important to highlight the importance of spending on Research & Development.
Regards
Mak Khalil
President 2019-20

Thank you  to Garry Maloney  who acted as MC for the evening and helped score the results. Also thank you to everyone who helped set up and pack up  on the night and to Mandy Van for the fabulous photos some of which you can see here or in the photo albums section.

A bug thank you to our sponsors Sydney FC, North Ryde Golf Club, ASICS,  Endota Spa Macquarie Centre, Harry Hartog Macquarie Centre, Lush Macquarie Centre and Cookie from Art Attack Macquarie Centre. All these sponsors provided prizes for the silent auction and raffle.

2019 Carols on the Common Disbursement of Funds
On Wednesday the 4 March the 2019 Carols on the Common Committee met to discuss the disbursement of funds raised from the 2019 event:

Income from the event raised $59,033.82
Expenses for the event were $36,681.28
Which gave us a surplus of $22,352.54

There was an opening balance of $60, which gave us an adjusted balance of $22,412.54.

The committee made the decision to donate the $5,347.33, which is the amount raised from the ‘Car Parking’ and ‘Bucket Collection’, to ‘Bush Fire Relief’ through RAWCS (Rotary Australia Wide Community Service). We are trying to find a RAWCS ‘Bush Fire Relief’ project, which specifically targets the NSW South Coast. If there isn’t a project for this area, half the money will be donated to the RAWCS National area and the other half to the RAWCS Taree area.

For the remaining $17,065.21, this will split between the Rotary Clubs of North Ryde and Macquarie Park ($8,532.60), to go to each club.

From the $8,532 that each club will receive the committee recommended that each club consider making a donation to ROMAC, the charity that the Carols usually raises money for, of either $2,000 or $2,500.

Regards
Garry Maloney
RCNR Board Director

Your Club and the Bobbo 29 March 2020

Hello Club President!

I’m helping to drive registrations for (one of) Sydney’s best charity rides - The Bobbin Head Cycle Classic (the Bobbo), which will be held on Sunday 29 March 2020, and I’d like to invite you and your club to help us by spreading the word, recruiting riders and supporting their fundraising.

The Bobbo is owned and managed by the Rotary Clubs of Turramurra, Kuring gai, Wahroonga and St Ives. Since the first event 9 years ago this unique partnership of Rotary Clubs has raised over $800,000 for our charity partner Lifeline and other selected charities.

The Bobbo has a great reputation within the cycling community. There are four different routes which riders can select according to their abilities. Serious cyclists return year after year to challenge themselves on the longest rides, while social cyclists will enjoy the shorter routes.

All the routes go through some of the most stunning bushland and waterfront scenery in the Greater Sydney region. Some 2,500 riders are supported by around 450 enthusiastic volunteers who, along with the Police, SES and St Johns, make it one of the best-organised and safest events on the cycling calendar.

We’d really appreciate any help you can give us to provide maximum publicity for the Bobbo. You will find attached a flyer which can easily be included with your Club’s newsletter. Please also consider entering a team from your Club. Teams of five or more who raise over $1500 are eligible to access the Corporate Hospitality Marquee for free refreshments, snacks, beer and massage.

The funds raised by this terrific event helps Lifeline year after year to save lives through their Crisis support counselling. Please lend us your support for 2020 as we try to break through the $1 million fundraising milestone!

We look forward to your support and if you have any questions please give me a call. See too www.bobbo.com.au
