We have seen a very active month within the Rotary Foundation and Rotary International. October is the month to eradicate Polio and educate people about long term lifelong effects of a polio sufferer. It has been a Rotary initiative for many years to eradicate polio in the world and a wonderful initiative to ride the trains of the Sydney rail network was initiated by Dave and Mark Anderson, which took place on Saturday 23 October 2026.
What a wonderful initiative with over $81,000 raised so far to help in the eradication of polio. As this donation is also met by the Gates Foundation at two for one, that is a wonderful rounded up figure of nearly $180,000! Well done Mark and Dave for a wonderful day on the trains and well done to everybody that achieved their goals of donating to the End Polio Day!
Our Rotary Club of North Ryde will be donating the funds raised from our next BBQ at Bunnings, on Saturday 7 November 2026, toward the End Polio Now campaign with Rotary. We must remember that our world is a much safer place when we as Rotarians build a collaborative around an initiative to end a childhood disease in the world. I remember people that I grew up with having suffered polio, it is a lifelong debilitating disease and needs to be eradicated. It was not that long ago that it was a scourge of society.
What better way to get the Rotary name out there than by social media publications around the train ride to end polio in Sydney. It was even on the Sunrise Show with Mark and Dave being interviewed, and we saw in the background some familiar faces of PDG Lindsay May and Tanya Mace from Lane Cove Rotary Club and a few others hopping on and off trains all over the network to raise funds to end polio, well done and congratulations getting the Rotary name out there so people can come and seek membership with a worldwide active, relevant and modern Rotary!

Bernie and Peter Mason
