9 December 2022

Hello Fellow Rotarians and friends,

Happy New Year and welcome to the first newsletter for 2023. Hope everyone enjoyed their break over the holiday season and are raring to go! It was great to catch up with several of you at our traditional start of the year breakfast at Café SaBu in Cox’s Road Mall on Saturday 22 January 2023.

Since the last communication, the major event taking place was the 2022 Rotary Carols on the Common on Sunday 18 December.  It was wonderful to return to the North Ryde Common after 2 years. What a great turnout it was, confirming that it is a great community event enjoyed by everyone.  Our club worked very well alongside the Rotary Club of Macquarie Park - thank you to everyone who was involved in planning and organizing as well as those helping on the day. A huge thank you to Victoria Crawford whose project management skills helped make the planning process so much better and I am sure everyone will agree, has led to a robust planning/organisation template for the event which can be continued to be used in the future.

The Tree of Joy at Cox’s Road Mall again spread a lot of cheer in our community thanks to Pam Wood and her group of helpers. A huge number of gifts were collected and distributed. Special thanks to Bendigo Bank North Ryde who is a major supporter of this activity.

In the last newsletter, I had reported that my proposal to have a multi-club social event and/or meeting was received with a lot of enthusiasm at the last Riverside Cluster Presidents meeting.  Bernadette Horrell, President of Rotary Club of Ryde has been instrumental in organizing such a meeting for Wednesday 22 February 2023 evening.  All club members would have received the information from Garry’s email.  I encourage you all to attend (partners are welcome) and make the event really successful. Rotary Clubs working together has been a focus over the last couple of years and it is a great opportunity to make new connections and become part of something greater than just our own clubs!

There are several activities coming up in the next few months including the North Ryde eFun Run 2023, IT Tour for Country Students, Bunnings BBQs, Youth projects, Pride of Workmanship, and others. It is going to be a busy second half of the Rotary year. We plan to discuss these at our next club meeting on Friday 3 February 2023.

We will soon be able to form a sub-committee with members with brand new knees. First it was Brian. Now it is Victoria whose recent operation has gone well and she is undergoing rehab.  Shankar is seriously considering it too. All the best to all of you!

I thank everyone in the Club for their commitment, energy and contribution towards making a difference.

The 2022-23 presidential theme logo was designed by renowned Australia-based Indigenous artist Riki Salam to represent RI President Jennifer Jones’ theme and initiatives. The logo represents key elements of Rotary while honouring the Indigenous culture:
  • The circle signifies connections to one another.
  • The dots around the circle represent people, one for each of our areas of focus.
  • The circle and the dots together become a navigation star, which signifies Rotary’s guiding light.
  • The solid line underneath signifies a digging stick used for hard work — a tool that Rotary’s people of action use to get things done.
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the country on which we meet, the Wallumattagal people of the Eora Nation. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Stories
The end of 2022 and into 2023
As the year drew to a close there were many activities our Rotary Club was involved in.  Many photos were uploaded to What's App but a few are reproduced here.

The tree of Joy was again a huge success and would not be possible without the support of the local businesses in Cox's Rd.

Below are some photos of certificates of appreciation given to some of those businesses,  Major supporter was the Bendigo Bank

NRCA seniors lunch
Once again we were able to provide a Christmas Lunch for about 50 of the senior clients of North Ryde Community Aid.

This was held at North Ryde Golf Club on Tuesday 13 December and proved to be an enjoyable afternoon.  The main funding came from the City of Ryde Council through a community grant obtained by the Rotary Club of North Ryde.

In 2023 North Ryde Community Aid will be managed by Anglicare.

Carols on the Common 2022
On 18 December the Carols returned to The Ryde Common.  It it was a great success and as President Sandeep says in his message, it was a great example of co-operation between two clubs.

The Weekly Times gave us some prominent publicity.

But of course after the fireworks are over, the pack up must begin.  So a big thanks to those who were able to stay and do that work - and the next day as several members turned up to ensure the grounds were clean.

The morning after cleaning detail - Garry Maloney, PP Peter Mason and PP Rob Wilkinson.
Our Club Christmas Dinner
Many of our members and friends gathered at the North Ryde Golf Club for a Christmas dinner.

Lots of laughter, lovely meal and a great way to end the year.

RYLA 2023
Held in January, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program was a wonderful experience for our representative, Bernadette Sears.  RYLA is a week long camp for 18 to 25 year olds and explores all aspects of leadership.  Bernadette had the opportunity to meet Tylah McConnell, who was a  participant from our Club several years ago and has returned each year as a leader.  Tylah has shown how powerful the RYLA experience can be and how it can affect a person's life.
