DVSafe Phone Collection Box at Cox's Road MallOn Thursday 1 August we were pleased to officially launch our strategic partnership with DVSafePhone, the not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting individuals affected by domestic violence across Australia, This collaboration aims to collect old, functioning mobile phones to bolster DVSafePhone's mission of providing free, essential lifelines to domestic violence survivors. You are encouraged to actively participate by donating your old, operational mobile phones. A DVSafePhone donation collection box has been placed at Cox’s Rd Mall, North Ryde offering a convenient place for you to contribute to this significant cause. How to prepare a phone?.Here is the link. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and provide vital resources to those in need. Please bring your old mobile phones and their chargers (any make or model) and place them in the box, which will be sited near Coxs Road Fruit Market. Any phones that cannot be repaired will be used for parts or recycled. The 2024 North Ryde eFun Run for Youth Mental Health The North Ryde eFun Run for Youth Mental Health is on again this year from Sunday 28 April until Sunday 5 May 2024. This year the Rotary Club of North Ryde is delighted to be working in partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Ryde and Macquarie Park as well as Macquarie University Lifespan Health & Wellbeing Research Centre ( formerly the Centre for Emotional Health) in organising the eFun Run. The event is open to Rotary club members, family, colleagues & friends; community members & groups; and university & school students. Entrants nominate a distance they will challenge themselves to cover during the week. They can walk, jog, run or ride a bike in their own time, at their own pace, individually or in a team over the week of the eFun Run. Each entrant or team can seek sponsorship for their challenge from their families, friends and colleagues through the eFun Run website. Join us this year and help raise funds for Youth Mental Health. North Sydney Sunrise Stroke Safe – 11 October – Caleb FergusonMore than 27,000 strokes will be experienced by Australians this year – that is one stroke every 19 minutes. But the good news is that it doesn't need to be this way. Up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable. Associate Professor Caleb Ferguson is a Sydney based StrokeSafe Speaker and cardiovascular disease researcher. So, while he will present common information about stroke and its prevention, he will also draw on his own experiences as a researcher which makes his talk different – and very powerful. Shelterbox - Pakistan Flood Update PAKISTAN FLOOD UPDATE First shipment of aid arrives as much of the country remains underwater  Dear ROTARY,
A ShelterBox Response Team is in Pakistan working to get emergency shelter aid to thousands of people left with nowhere to live, following the devastating floods. Our initial emergency response will aim to support thousands of people in the KPK (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and Sindh provinces. For our first project, we are working in partnership with Islamic Relief Worldwide and Islamic Relief Pakistan to distribute tents, water filters and carriers, mosquito nets, and solar lights to thousands of people affected by the floods. Once our aid is in-country, we’ll be delivering training with our partners, on how to use our equipment and erect tents so that this knowledge can be shared with the affected communities. If you are one the generous supporters that have already donated, please accept my sincere thanks on behalf of those people that will receive essential aid in the coming days Many thousands remain without basic shelter and clean water, at risk from the elements and disease. Lane Cove Rotary Guest Speaker - Tom Sweeney OAM Tue 18 October 2022Dear Rotary Colleagues On Tuesday 18 October 2022, 6.30pm, Lane Cove Rotary are delighted to host PP Tom Sweeney OAM (Crows Nest) to talk about his life as a music entertainer and big show producer. Many will know Tom as; compere of District Conferences, presenter on PR, Media and the Macquarie Park Cemeterys' famous residents. Tom’s presentation called “Let’s Put On A Show” is a behind the scenes look at how a musical actually gets on the stage! Tom joined the then Willoughby Musical Society in 1969 and started directing musicals in 1978. Since then, Tom has directed over 40 productions for Willoughby and another 20 for other companies, including the Australian premier of Zorba, Meet Me in St Louis, Titanic, The Scarlet Pimpernel and directed the NSW premier of “Strictly Ballroom”. Now past President of Willoughby Theatre Company (2004), Tom and his wife Joy, also an accomplished director and costume designer, spend most of their leisure time involved with the theatre. Tom Sweeney is Past President of the Rotary Club of Crows Nest and a PHF, and has been a Rotarian since 1999. He has compered at least five District Conferences and District Change Over dinners. Vision 2022Rotary Clubs from District 9685 (Sydney, Australia) and District 3262 (Odisha, India) have joined hands to support the BKP Rotary Eye Hospital and Health Centre with hospital equipment and machinery through The Rotary Foundation Global Grant. The Town of Puri, with a population of over a million, will benefit from this project. The location of the center in the village of Jhinkiria, about 11 KMs from Puri and densely populated with no medical facilities nearby, will help prevent avoidable blindness. The Rotary eye care center will also create awareness among villagers about prevalent eye diseases. This will increase patient acceptance regarding the importance of routine eye examination, which will help proper identification and treatment of various eye conditions. We hope to help eye care professionals and health educators target specific educational initiatives and interventions. We need your support to make this a reality. Vision 202 has come forward to support this project along with Nautanki Theatre to present The Jungle Book to raise much needed funds for this project. Community Needs meeting at North Ryde RSL, 17 August 2022This was a joint meeting organised by Ryde Council for all Rotary clubs in our area. Twenty four people attended including our Bernie and Peter Mason. Tanya from the council was the MC. The council raised several needs for discussion and are looking for solutions or help to address the needs identified. There are 129,123 people, with a mean age of 37. 49% of whom were born overseas. 44.6% live in apartments with many being isolated. 41.5% rent their accommodation. The City of Ryde website has statistics pre covid and the impacts of the above demographics, including wage levels. One of the challenges is the use of open spaces. Even though council does implement the building in of greenspace and community space in high rise buildings, these are not being utilised by the occupants. The question was posed - could we think of a way to engage them? The State Government is pushing council for more high rise living, creating problems for council in how it can address the social problems which arise. Another challenge identified was the mix of faiths living in the same buildings. Council feels this is good, but the residents are not mixing or socialising because they don’t speak the same language. Council will release a social impact statement. There is an online help line for NDIS and ESL, but people do not understand how to access this. Solutions suggested
Council will collate all ideas, . There were other problems identified. Too many procedures and protocols which are confusing. Perhaps Rotary could fast track these in collaboration with council. John Dodd suggested a collaboration committee be set up to consider how to cut all the red tape to get the emergency health centre for youth established, by Rotary clubs of our area. It was also suggested that a Corporate Social Impact fund involving all corporates in our area could be established. This was felt to be difficult but not impossible. Lots to think about. It will be interesting to see what action can follow. |

Train to End Polio Monday 24 October is WORLD POLIO DAY. Ending Polio is the number one priority of both Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. Each Club is asked to make a commitment to contribute US$1,500 ($2,175). Over the past four years we have conducted the All Stations challenge train ride to End Polio. Over those four years we have raised in Greater Sydney over $450,000 to ending Polio before the Gates Match. This year more than ever we need your commitment and support. To get the train timetable ask a Club member as it has been emailed to them. Even if you are not on a trainline, PLEASE do your bit by joining us and riding with us for a station or two. It is a great Fellowship day, a great PUBLIC IMAGE Day and it puts the Rotary Brand out there in front of the public. Start planning your fundraising for this event. North Sydney Sunrise 13 September - Climate actionNext Tuesday come and hear Juliette Tobias-Webb. How can we actually enable stronger action on climate change using behavioural insights? Dr Juliette Tobias-Webb is a Chief Behavioural Scientist, Senior MBA Lecturer and one of 60 women in Australia nominated as a Superstar of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Dr Juliette has a PhD in Experimental Psychology from Cambridge University (focused on gambling behaviour) and has worked for a range of leading government and corporate organisations to design better products and services for human decision making and behaviour change. With the rise in polarisation, it is important to reframe how we think about changing someone's mind. If you want to bridge the gap, it’s more productive to appeal to someone’s identity, motivations, and social networks than to their logic. Dr Juliette will present evidence from psychological science to help us understand why we are polarised, how we can shift people’s beliefs and judgements, and how we can create sustainable behavioural change (without changing people's minds). Die or Die TryingDie or Die Trying: Escaping the Taliban   Abraham Mott Hall 15A Argyle PL, Millers Point NSW 2000 Friday 19th August 6pm Sydney Cove Rotary is hosting this event to support refugees. Marwa Moeen is an Afghan refugee who escaped the Taliban and this is a screening of the documentary about her and fellow refugees. The one-hour documentary depicts the gripping and emotional experience of 15 young women from Kabul as the Taliban invade their city and seize power. There will then be a Q & A afterward. Rebecca Langton from the Refugee Council of Australia will be shedding light on the current situation. North Sydney Sunrise - The Aussie Camino – 23 August 2022 – Luke KeigheryThe Aussie Camino is a 200km pilgrimage route running from Portland in Victoria to Penola in South Australia, inspired by the life and journeys of Australia’s Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop and her mentor Fr Julian Tenison Woods. The walk is based on the traditions of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela: pilgrims receive a guidebook, passport, scallop shell and stay in the local towns along the way. Luke is Waverton Hub President; he enjoys walking and is passionate about supporting worthy causes. In March this year Luke walked the Aussie Camino in a group of 8 pilgrims. It was an amazing adventure and Luke has many stories to tell. Through this walk Luke raised over $10,000 for Interplast Australia – a charity doing amazing work sending teams of volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists and allied health professionals to provide life-changing surgery and medical training in 17 countries across the Asia-Pacific region. North Sydney Sunrise – Demographics of the North Sydney Community – 02 August 2022 – Eric PoulosWhat is happening to the neighbourhood? Is it all jobs and growth in our CBD? North Sydney is seen as a great place to live, work, be educated, visit and shop. But really, do you know about the mix of people, housing and facilities and how it’s changed in the last five years? Come & hear Eric Poulos describe changes in the demographics of the North Sydney Community. One of his current projects is to survey families and input into a new Community Services Strategy for North Sydney which he’ll also fill you in about. Eric Poulos is North Sydney Council’s Community Worker and Social Planner and he’ll take you through census information and a range of data about the area. He’s worked in North Sydney for 7 years and has a wealth of experience in managing projects in the social and welfare field. He is strategic and creative, with particular interests in social planning, cultural diversity, community development, capacity building and community engagement. Over half his career has been in local government. One of his current projects is to deliver a new Family and Children’s Strategy for North Sydney which he’ll also fill you in about. North Sydney Sunrise Living Well with Glaucoma – 26 July 2022 – Gem CheIt is estimated that over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma, yet 50% are unaware they have it, thinking they have healthy eyes. Anyone may develop glaucoma, but the incidence increases with age. About 1 in 10,000 babies are born with glaucoma, by age 40 about 1 in 200 have glaucoma, rising to 1 in 8 at age 80. Known as the 'silent thief of sight' glaucoma develops slowly and often without any symptoms, leaving people undetected until the disease reaches an advanced stage. Left untreated, glaucoma can cause vision loss and may even lead to blindness. But if detected early, glaucoma can be managed and vision loss prevented. Gem Chew (a Glaucoma Australia clinical volunteer) will provide an overview of glaucoma, the importance of early detection as well as tips on living with and managing this condition. Gem is a fifth year medical student at UNSW and is currently on clinical rotations with an ophthalmology clinic in Green Square where she is working as an Ophthalmic Assistant. Reg Chard is a genuine digger – and a great Australian. He will talk about his own experiences during World War 2 including the Kokoda Trail. Patients have been waiting two years for critical medical treatment. Countless people have gone untreated including those with cancer, burns or trauma-induced injuries that are treatable! COVID-19 travel restrictions have kept volunteer healthcare and surgical teams grounded. But now that return is possible, Interplast urgently needs to get their volunteers back. |

Books in Homes Every child at Moree East Public School received two books in Term 1 to start their home libraries as part of the Books in Homes project. Turramurra Rotary combined with the Rotary Clubs of Chatswood/Roseville, North Ryde, Wahroonga and West Pennant Hills to raise over $12,000 for this wonderful project. Rotary Districts 9685 and 9650 supported the project with grants totalling $6,500. Books in Homes continues throughout this year. RC North Sydney Sunrise - Edgeworth David family - 17 MayT.W Edgeworth David came to Australia from Wales as a young mining engineer in 1882. On the ship coming out he met and fell in love with Cara Mallett, an orphan from a working class background in rural England. This was the beginning of a lifelong marriage and a remarkable partnership that saw Cara establish the first college in NSW to train women teachers. Her husband became Professor of Geology at Sydney University. The couple raised a family in Sydney while actively engaged with many aspects of the city’s cultural and political life. David is remembered for his heroic expedition with Douglas to find the South Magnetic Pole in 1908, and later, for leading the Mining Battalion the ‘Tunnellers’ in their dangerous work on the Western Front. Cara’s life, though less well-known, was equally adventurous, including trips to a coral island in the Pacific and to geology camps in the Snowy Mountains. During the war she ran a convalescent home for soldiers in the Blue Mountains and was later instrumental in the founding of the Girl Guides. Her two daughters also led remarkable and inspirational lives. Jenny Horsfield will talk about this remarkable family. She is a Canberra writer and historian. Her book, ‘Rainbow: the story of Rania MacPhillamy’ won the award for Non-Fiction Book of the Year in the 2008 ACT Writers and Publishers awards. Letter from the District GovernorDistrict 9685 and flood relief.
I’m pleased to announce D9685 has been granted a Rotary Foundation Disaster Response Grant of US$25,000 (AU$34,500) to provide relief to people in D9685 who are in need as a result of the current flooding. We now ask clubs who wish to assist flood-affected families and individuals in their areas to contact District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair David Dean at 0412 798 526, or email: djhdean@gmail.com for more information on the logistics of providing this aid. We plan to supply clubs with gift cards from Woolworths and Bunnings to distribute to those in need. These cards will be only available for essentials and cannot be used for liquor, tobacco, or cash. This grant has been made available by the generosity of Rotarians around the world who have contributed to The Rotary Foundation Disaster Response Fund. In recent weeks, two other flood grants have been provided in northern New South Wales and south-east Queensland, and another one to Tonga. Districts in Europe are also receiving Disaster Fund grants to support refugees fleeing the conflict in the Ukraine. Today, RAWCS has approved my application for a District 9685 Rotary Australia Benevolent Society project to raise funds for flood victims in our local area. He established this, having spent 15 years with the CSIRO/National Measurement Institute’s High Voltage Laboratory. Paul has a Bachelor of Science (Maths & Physics) from Macquarie University and a licenced amateur radio operator, callsign VK2ZBI. Now that we have been able to see each other more freely it was great to be able to see them and present a plaque in recognition of the work they have done over the years for Rotary and also give them a certificate to show that we have planted a tree in their name as part of the GroTree project. Glaucoma Australia has launched a new fundraising initiative; 7 Sights in 7 Days Challenge. The campaign calls on Australians to share a photo of an amazing sight every day for seven days and raise funds to help take glaucoma blindness out of the picture. Taking place during World Glaucoma Week (6–12 March 2022), the challenge is a part of Glaucoma Australia’s annual Treat your Eyes campaign. Individuals and teams will be prompted to find, snap and share seven ‘sights’ during World Glaucoma Week, with daily themes such as ‘quirky’, ‘artistic’ and ‘culture’ to inspire creativity. The challenge will encourage people to get out and about, explore the visual beauty of their local area and raise much-needed funds for early detection programs and critical support services. ‘Anyone can develop glaucoma and the risk increases with age. Sight is incredibly precious and all too often, it’s something people don’t think about until something goes wrong. Disaster Aid Australia - UkraineAnother avenue for supporting Ukraine. Ukraine Humanitarian AppealOver the past few days the countries around the Ukraine are receiving tens of thousands of refugees following the Russian invasion of their country.  Our partner Disaster Aid Europe (DAE) is responding to the crisis by delivering Humanitarian Aid.  DAE volunteers will initially be travelling to the border with their trailer of much needed items. It is also hoped to take their humanitarian aid over the border to Rotarians in Uzhorod, Ukraine. Additionally a Rotary train with 600-700 Ukrainian refugees will be arriving in Pilsen and Jihlava in the Czech Republic and donations will also help these victims. Disaster Aid Australia has already agreed to provide a grant to assist their mission. GroTrees You Can Help Green the World One Tree at a Time In 1935, Rotary’s Founder Paul Harris left several permanent reminders of his international visits to Rotary Clubs, including the planting of trees in Australia.  Near North Sydney oval, Miller St.In this great tradition, GroTrees hopes to “green” Australia (and perhaps the World!) one tree at a time. Since 2007, GroTrees has been a partnership between Rotary Clubs and a Landcare group. GroTrees are given as gifts – for guest speakers, thank you for a job well done, congratulations on a birthday and so on. Each recipient gets a numbered certificate. We encourage recipients to visit and hug their tree! Currently we are planting in Lithgow. Rotary Club of North Sydney Sunrise - 8 March 2022Federal Election Facts and Foibles – 08 March 2022 – Ian BrightwellThis talk will give a quick overview of the Australian federal election in terms of size and processes. This information will provide a basis for a closer examination of the processes which are under strain and those which are undergoing change. The talk will particularly look at the increased use of computers in counting of senate votes and the difficulties this poses to traditional partisan scrutiny processes. Ian Brightwell is a consultant and experienced CIO. He has also held an adjunct academic position at the University of NSW in cyber security and also developed and presented a post graduate course in IT Governance for Charles Stuart University. He was the CIO for the NSW Electoral Commission (NSWEC) in Australia from 2005 to April 2016 and responsible for developing all its technology and cyber security during that period. Prior to that position he was a consultant performing a variety of consulting assignments, within state and federal government agencies and the private sector. In his role at NSWEC he was responsible for the development and operation of the iVote system which in 2015 was credited as taking the largest number of remote internet votes for a parliamentary election in the world. This sustainability focus aligns with ZERO CO who have a mission to minimise the use of single use plastics. Their innovation is to provide a range of household products in returnable pouches. Tonga Volcanic Eruption Following the Tongan eruption Disaster Aid Australia monitored the available information. As a small, Rotary based, charity we aim is to help smaller communities that the larger charities miss. We are also focussed on efficient delivery of aid to maximise the benfits of donations. (This has become even more important with the reduction of income during the COVID pandemic) With poor communcations, no ability for volunteers to travel, and no established partners we were reluctant to commit quickly. SITUATION REPORTWe have recently received the following information: Daily life goes on, but with the frustration of poor communication with the outside world. There is no necessity for food and water being shipped in after the initial shipments were sent and there are now desalination plants operating. Most residents across Tonga water harvest storage tank(s) and many residents removed downpipes into the tanks as soon as the warning went out which preserved the water that was in them. Most goods and services are available in Tonga and local organisations are asking well-meaning people not to send container loads of “stuff”, but money to ensure the economy (local suppliers) does not suffer. CONCLUSIONDisaster Aid Australia have decided we will be unlikely to add value to the Tongan situation and we will concentrate on other disasters where we can provide greater impact to affected communities, such as our current response following Typhoon Odette in the Philipinnes. International Travel (in the COVID world) – 1 Mar 2022 – Mark StaplesRotary Club of North Sydney Sunrise Mark Staples, a Kiwi (dual citizen) living in Sydney since 1980. IT manager for 20 years in Westpac, then 15 years in IBM. Last role in IBM was an IT Critical Situation Manager, including training of people in “Incident Management”. He joined Crows Nest Rotary in 2015 after retiring, where in 2016 he moved into, and still is, the Secretary. He had a 1-year break, when he was president for 2019-20 year. Mark also volunteers at the Crows Nest community Centre. And is a very serious Poker player. Mark will talk about his experience travelling to NZ last November/December getting through Quarantine & Self isolation. Coping with isolation is one aspect, but the additional planning required needs to be understood. Most importantly Mark will lead us through the planning considerations for his next trip – America in June. Rotary Club of North Sydney Sunrise Polio viruses – 15 Feb 2022 – Don NapperThe wild poliovirus appears to be nearing eradication as there were perhaps as few as 5 cases in 2021. However, the occurrence of polioviruses derived from the use of the Sabin oral vaccine has become many times greater (51 cases) than that of the wild virus, even though (or perhaps because) the oral vaccine powered the eradication of the wild virus from almost all continents. These vaccine-derived polioviruses can behave like wild viruses and cause paralysis, so they too must be eradicated to end polio once-and-for-all. Don Napper will explain how Vaccine-Derived Polioviruses are slowing the “End Polio Now” program. Emeritus Professor Don Napper was educated at Sydney and Cambridge Universities in molecular chemistry. Tonga AppealRAWCS has set up an appeal fund for donations to support the people of Tonga affected by the volcanic eruption and ensuing tsanami. District 9685 is liaising with the Consul of Tonga and has approved $10,000 for supply of equipment to be agreed with the Tongan Government. The balance will be placed into the RAWCS Project account Should any of you wish to make a personal TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation, the following should help. On 31st January, it was decided that we will not undertake the train ride due to COVID restrictions, but feverish activity has started to morph this into a virtual event that will cover NSW. Conceptually every Rotarian will be encouraged to visit their local train station or even remote maybe disused stations, take a selfie and post to a website and make a polio donation through Raise for Rotary. Rotary Club of North Ryde Sunrise 1 March 2022USS INDIANAPOLIS departed San Francisco on the 16 July 1945 for a high speed run to Hawaii and then onto Tinian Island. The ship was commanded by Captain Charles McVay III. On board were key components for the atomic bomb. These components were delivered to Tinian Island on 26 July. They were then loaded onto the super fortress ENOLA GAY for the flight to Hiroshima. The return voyage was to be by Guam to Leyte. The ship was sunk by torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-58 halfway between Guam and Leyte. The ship lost all power, turned over and sank in 12 minutes. There were 900 survivors out of the 1,200 crew. However, the Navy lost the ship from its plotting boards, so no rescue was mounted. On the day 4 in the water the survivors were spotted by planes. After the 4 days in the water there were only 316 survivors out of the 900. Many had been taken by sharks. Captain McVay was court martialled for the loss of his ship. The captain of I-58 was brought to the USA by the prosecution to testify against McVay. The submarine captain testified that he was in such a good position to attack that zigzagging would have not have made any difference. Finally in 2000 McVay was exonerated by Congress and signed by Bill Clinton. This would be little comfort to McVay who received lots of hate mail and committed suicide in 1968. Come along to hear this amazing story of a travesty of justice to protect the reputations of some very important Navy people. Noel Phelan's first career was as a science and mathematics teacher. He then moved into IT with IBM where he spent 25 years in various technical and management positions. He has been a volunteer guide at the Maritime Museum for several years and enjoys showing visitors over HMAS Vampire, HMAS Advance, HMAS Onslow and First Lady. Rotary Club of North Ryde Sunrise 1 Feb 2022Speaker - 1st North Sydney Scouts - Stuart Warren 1st North Sydney Scouts (formally 1st Lavender Bay) operates out of the Scout Hall at 1 Munro Street in McMahons Point. While the hall may seem dormant, we are one of the biggest and most active Scout Groups on the Lower North Shore. We have 125 kids (co-ed) aged 5-18 who attend a weekly programme of activities plus 2-3 weekend activities per term, run by 16 volunteer leaders. Over the last 5 years we have been able to invest heavily in new equipment and leader training that lets us run an exciting programme of overnight hiking, canyoning, white water kayaking, abseiling and rock climbing. 1st North Sydney has been established for 12 years now. Over that time we have built increasingly stronger links to the community, including running a fruit & veg co-op, making weekly fresh food donations to LGA residents in financial difficulty and assisting senior residents move large items for council clean up (to mention a few). Phoenix House provides early intervention and support services to the most challenged young people living in Sydney and delivers life-changing outcomes. Nuclear powered submarines for AustraliaNuclear Powered Submarines for Australia – 7 December – Peter Bullard The announcement on 16 September of the historic AUKUS Alliance a trilateral security partnership, caught us all by surprise. In hindsight however, its origin can be traced to recent political events and the rapidly changing strategic military environment. The first major initiative of the Alliance is to assist Australia to acquire at least eight nuclear powered submarines with the US and UK helping with technology transfer. Exactly how that will be done is not yet clear as Vice Admiral Johnathan Mead AO has been appointed as the Chief of Nuclear-Powered Submarine Task Force to conduct an 18-month study to “define the optimal path to acquire the submarines.” It will be a challenging project as the intention is to build all the submarines in South Australia in time to take over from the current Collins Class submarines as they retire from service. Peter will cover a broad sweep from the origin of the Alliance and the regional reactions to it with an overview of the two options available, the US Virginia Class and the UK Astute Class, outlining their roles and capabilities followed by a short excursion into the support facilities, also covering nuclear safety. Presenter - John Peter Bullard Peter spent 35 years as an engineer officer in the Royal Navy. He qualified as a conventional submariner and as the RN nuclear submarine program expanded undertook an advanced marine engineering course studying nuclear submarine reactor design. His sea time in nuclear submarines finished with a nine-month unsupported deployment to the Far East. He followed by lecturing to engineer officers undergoing nuclear propulsion training before moving to the nuclear operational safety section. His design time was spent as the head of the future submarine nuclear propulsion plant section working on the as then unnamed, Astute Cass machinery design. In London in the Naval Staff Operational Requirements Directorate he managed the concept studies for the Astute class. He became an Australian citizen in 2009. Bunnings Community MarketAll Bunnings NSW stores are planning to host a community market event on the 9th of December from 6-8pm. The Rotary Club of North Ryde has been asked to hold a Rotary awareness stall at Gladesville. Bunnings is supporting us with a spinning wheel with chocolates/gift cards on it as a fun game. The customer just spins the wheel for a gold coin donation then whatever it lands on they get e.g. a chocolate or a Bunnings gift card – all supplied by Bunnings. Captain Cook Graving DockNoel Phelan – 16 Nov 2021 The construction of the dock was the second largest engineering project in Australia – larger than the Harbour Bridge. The Snowy Scheme was the largest. Ships were growing in size and the Sutherland dock at Cockatoo Island could not accommodate them. In 1938 the nearest large dock was the Royal Naval Base at Singapore – two weeks sailing away. After investigating 16 sites around Australia, Garden Island was selected. The construction required the reclamation of 30 acres of land which resulted in Garden Island being joined to the mainland at Pott’s Point. The dock is 358 m long and can be divided into two sections. An enormous amount of infrastructure was needed to support the operation of the dock and work on the ships. Come along and learn how a dock operates and how the dock was built during the war when equipment was very limited. Noel Phelan's first career was as a science and mathematics teacher. He then moved into IT with IBM where he spent 25 years in various technical and management positions. He has been a volunteer guide at the Maritime Museum for several years and enjoys showing visitors over HMAS Vampire, HMAS Advance, HMAS Onslow and First Lady. Mentoring men - Ian WestmorlandMentoring Men is a registered Australian charity providing free long-term one-to-one life mentoring programs for men Australia wide. They focus on a proactive approach, engaging with Australian men who need help before they spiral into crisis. They welcome all men to engage with their mentoring programs and strive to be as diverse as the communities they serve and work within. Currently the Mentors collectively speak over 57 languages. Ian worked for 40 years in the Australian and New Zealand utilities industries in various IT roles, mostly as an IT development and support manager. On 10 September 2013, he experienced a life-changing moment that ultimately led to his decision to retire from paid work in May 2014 and commence a volunteer mentoring career with the Raise Foundation, Kidshope and COACH mentoring programs. Following a personal challenge in 2018 Ian developed the Mentoring Men program which was officially launched in November 2018. World polio eradicationWorld polio day on 24 October saw great optimism that polio can be eraducated. There are only two wild polio virus cases currently identified in the world. One each in Pakistan and Afghanistan. A polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan has faced challenges in particular over the past two years — due to vaccine hesitancy and the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a five-month pause in polio immunization campaigns starting in March of 2020. The Pakistani government reported earlier this month that its third vaccination campaign of the year in mid-September succeeded in the administering of polio drops to more than 40 million children across the country. A house-to-house polio vaccination drive for all children under 5 in Afghanistan will restart on November 8 for the first time in more than three years, now that the conflict torn country’s new Taliban government has granted approval. The fear is that with such a low case count complacency will arise. The low case numbers are partly due to restrictions on public movement to prevent COVID19 from spreading in Pakistan and as restrictions are wound back cases could rise. Rotary’s Global Polio Eradication Initiative was founded in 1988. The program has since reduced infections by more than 99.9 percent worldwide and immunized nearly 3 billion children against polio, preventing more than 19.4 million cases of paralysis. But Rotary officials predict “hundreds of thousands of children could be paralyzed” if polio is not eradicated within 10 years. It is not onlt the wild polio virus that must be considered. There are outbreaks of cVDPV type 2 (Vaccine induced polio), and to address them, a new polio vaccine that carries less risk of changing to a harmful form that could cause paralysis in low-immunity settings has been developed We can't stop now! Joseph Conrad's Eastern Voyages - 19 October 2021Ian Burnet has spent thirty years, living, working and travelling in Indonesia and is fascinated by the diverse history and culture of the archipelago. This is reflected in his books Spice Islands, followed by East Indies, then Archipelago - A Journey Across Indonesia, then Where Australia Collides with Asia, then The Tasman Map and now his latest book Joseph Conrad’s Eastern Voyages. The life of Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski reads like an adventure story, an adventure story that could be written by somebody like Joseph Conrad. The young Conrad dreamed of a life at sea, he eventually became a British merchant seaman and he spent fifteen years sailing on the classic three-masted, square-rigged sailing ships before they were ultimately replaced by steamships. During this period, he worked his way up from apprentice to third mate, to second mate, to first mate and finally the captain of one of these beautiful ships. Conrad loved the ‘mysterious East’ and his first books – Almayers Folly, An Outcast of the Islands, Lord Jim and The Rescue were all set in Borneo and based on the people and places he encountered in his own voyages as first mate on a trading vessel based out of Singapore. In this new book, Ian has taken the liberty to place the parts of these first novels into their proper narrative sequence and focus on the back-story of his characters, which will make it easier to discover Conrad’s genius. ShelterboxShelterbox has already sent Shelterboxes to Haitii after the devastating earthquake but more needs to be done.  Their work extends to Honduras and Tigray in Ethiopia and they are also considering what can be done in Afghanistan. ShelterBox has responded to Afghanistan on 4 occasions (2002, 2006, 2008, 2016-17), to support people displaced by the conflict as well as by extreme weather, such as floods. Parkinson’s & Shake It UpAn invitation to join a fascinating Zoom meeting on 17 August from North Sydney Sunrise Rotary Club Clyde Campbell is the founder of Shake It Up Australia Foundation and has an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision for the future. Clyde decided not to sit back and wait for the rest of the world to find a cure for Parkinson’s but to join the action. In 2011 he launched Shake It Up Australia Foundation with one mission – to increase awareness and funding in Australia targeted at finding better treatments and ultimately a cure for Parkinson’s. Clyde also wanted to ensure that 100% of all donations received went to Parkinson’s research. This commitment is made possible by Clyde and his brother Greg funding all the administration and overhead costs of the foundation. Since 2011 the foundation has co-funded over $15 Million into Parkinson’s Research in Australia and are now the leading non-government funder of Parkinson’s research across multiple institutes. On 26 January 2021, Clyde was appointed as a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia (General Division) in the Australia Day Honours List, in recognition of his significant service to community health, particularly to people living with Parkinson’s disease. He will talk about his diagnosis and how he came to start the foundation and establish a partnership with The Michael J. Fox Foundation and our research agenda and progress. Pearl Beach Ephemeral ArtLooking for something to do on the June long weekend. The Pearl Beach Arboretum (Crommelin Native Arboretum) is holding its first Ephemeral Art Trail (PBEAT) over three weeks in June 2021. It will be open to the public from Friday 11 June until the end of the first week of the public school holidays, Sunday 4 July 2021. There will be 16 ephemeral artworks by artists or groups of artists and five community installations on display which are inspired by the Arboretum site and which our special relationship with the Australian bush. Information from volunteers and activities for children will be available on weekends. PBEAT also aims to support community identity and increase cultural vibrancy. Creating the unexpected is a key objective. A donation of $5 per adult is requested from visiting adults to go towards the environmental education objectives of the Arboretum. There is a $500 cash prize arising from “People’s Choice” voting. Return of Exchange StudentsWelcome home youth exchange dinner for district 9685. Juliet, Pete and I (Bernie) had the pleasure of attending this dinner on Friday the 5th February with Pam and Tom. What a wonderful night hosted by Carlingford club at the Muirfield Golf Club, North Rocks. It was so nice to be able to speak with people from district and to hear of the students’ varied experiences of a Covid style exchange. Whilst many did enjoy some freedom, there were those that were in lock down with one host family for a large portion of the time. Guest speakers amongst the returning students were: Chloe Brennan (Switzerland) Zoe Evans (Chile) Poppy Guy (Japan) Jarred Sullivan (Sweden), and our sponsored student. Valentino Yamasaki. One theme that was evident throughout the speeches was that they all didn’t want to come home. Sharon and Robert Sullivan were also there, and Sharon was saying what a different boy Jared is. Some things are still the same but now he will eat so much more of her cooking. We also witnessed the special presentation of the Ruby Paul Harris pin to Michelle Westland, Social Impact Network, for her services to youth exchange. This award was presented by Susan and John Wakefield Co-chairs of district 9685 Rotary Youth Exchange Committee. Considering Michelle has only just welcomed her son, Ben, into the world 2 weeks ago, it was lovely that she was there to accept her award. Ben was definitely a highlight of the evening too. Each student that spoke singled out Michelle and Winnie Yip for special thanks for looking after them from this end, during such a difficult time. Well done Michelle, congratulations. During the proceedings it was announced that, at this point in time, the program will be in hiatus until at least until 2023. This is a Rotary International decision, and must take into consideration the unfolding situation around the globe. We also enjoyed a Chinese dinner together, albeit in a Covid safe environment. Thank you for organising us to be there together Pam Bennett. It was lovely to catch up with you and Tom also. I have invited Jared to speak to us at one of our meetings soon. He is happy to do so. Live Carols on the Common OnlineGreat show for our first recording of the Carols. When we thought back in June it would not be possible to have a Carols in 2020 it was good that we thought laterally and went a little bit virtual. Bunnings BBQThe Rotary Club of North Ryde participated in the 'Sausage Sizzle' at Bunnings BBQ North Ryde on Saturday 28 November. It was a long hot day, with the BBQ running from 9am to 4pm, but the Rotary day was from 6:30am to 6:00pm, after picking up food for the day in the morning and the clean up and taking items back to our Kennards storage at the end. The following members were there for the whole day: Rob Wilkinson, Mandy Van, David Martin, Peter Mason and Garry Maloney. The following members were there for half the day: Bernie Mason, who started there in the morning, had to leave and then came back around 12 noon, Sandeep Rathi (morning), Pam Wood (afternoon) and Liane Corbett (morning). We also had help from two people from Rotaract, Sara and Nirth. It was a great effort by our team. The result of that effort is that the club made a profit for the day of $1,433. Well done everyone but with special thanks to Garry and Rob who did the bulk of the organising. Thank you also to Kevin Lance from Eastwood-Gladesville Rotary Club for his great advice and support for our first Bunnings BBQ! Tree of joyThe Tree of Joy continues at Coxs Road Mall until 16 December. Every day we are amazed at the number of gifts placed under the tree. Big thanks to Pam Wood, Garry Maloney, Bernie and Pete Mason, Liane Corbett and Allan McNally (he used to clean at Coxs Rd Mall and since his retirement is still helping us out) for collecting the gifts and placing in the store room. This photo is an example of the number of gifts being collected each day - often two trolleys full. The generosity of the North Ryde community is wonderful.  |

Garry Maloney PHF Award 2020Garry Maloney Receives Paul Harris Fellowship at October Celebration Dinner  Garry Maloney, Mak Kahill, District Governor David Clark, Rob Wilkinson This year, in awarding a Paul Harris Fellowship, we would like to honour the service to Rotary, and commitment to community service, of Garry Maloney. Garry was born in Sydney in 1950 and raised in Balmain throughout his school years. He attended St Augustine’s Balmain for Primary school and Christian Brothers Balmain for High School. Garry has always been a keen sportsman, competing in tennis, cricket and football as a young person and he continues to enjoy tennis and golf regularly. Since joining Rotary, Garry has participated in a number of golf days supporting ROMAC, Australian Rotary Health and other charities. On completing High School, Garry commenced work at Sydney County Council, which later became Sydney Electricity, where he continued to work for 27 years, in IT and customer service. On leaving Sydney Electricity he tried his hand as a tennis coach and then joined Oce Australia. Garry worked for Oce for 14 years as a Customer Relations Officer and then as a member of the sales team. During his time there, Garry organised a number of golf days for clients. He also tried his hand at musical theatre, for a couple of years, with a group of staff members who were in an amateur musical society in Carlingford! In 2011, Garry joined Konica Minolta in customer relations and stayed with the company until his retirement in 2018. Garry met his partner, Pam, and her two children in 1989 and they moved to Castle Hill in 1992. Garry became involved in the parent committees whilst the children were at high school, helping at working bees, school fetes, art shows and other fundraising events and activities. At the same time, he also helped at the schools where Pam was working, providing an extra pair of hands whenever needed. Garry joined Rotary, with his partner Pam, in November 2014 after helping at the North Ryde Fun Run in August of that year. Since joining, Garry has been a strong supporter of the Club. He has involved himself in many fundraising events particularly sausage sizzles, book sales, fun runs and the Carols on the Common. Even whilst frequently travelling interstate for work, he would organise free printing for the events through Konica Minolta. Garry has also helped with the Country Students’ IT Tour, assisting with organising venues to visit, and accompanying the group of students on tours and activities. Since retiring, Garry has taken on more volunteering activities with the Club. He has been operations coordinator for the Carols on the Common in 2019 and the North Ryde Fun Run in 2018 and 2019. He has given his time to set up and pack up many fundraisers, often working throughout the day as well as the days before and after the events. He has attended organising committee meetings regularly. He has sourced prizes and sponsors for the fun runs, trivia nights and ensured certificates of appreciation are delivered. This year Garry has taken on the role of Club Service Director, working with the Board to organise social events and club meetings. Garry’s exceptional contribution to the Rotary Club of North Ryde, and to our community in general, makes him very deserving of recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow. |

Carolin Wilkinson receives a Community Service AwardCarolin Wilkinson Receives Community Service Award at October 2020 Celebration dinner  Pat Perrin, David Martin, Carolin Wilkinson, Annette Billington and District Governor, David Clark It is understandable when you live in a community for nearly 40 years, you would have roots, know many people and local businesses and yet not so usual to have so many people call you by name. When you’ve raised a family and stood shoulder to shoulder with your husband during that time, it is not unknown to have been involved in groups, both informal and formal, at their various stages of life. Yet it is not very common for someone to still relate to those groups and be supportive of their community aims long after their direct involvement has passed. Nor is it usual to join a community aid organisation and still be there 16 years later, for the sole reason that the purpose of your work is so meaningful to their clients: the aged and the not so fortunate in your neighbourhood. “Who doesn't want to know that we notice them and value them? And who might respond to us better when they feel that they matter? It probably cannot be overstated – it matters...that people matter.” Steve Goodier could have been thinking of Carolin Wilkinson when he said these sage words. From Mothers’ groups and Babysitting Clubs, School Canteens and P+Cs, supporting her children’s academic and numerous extra-curricular activities – to say nothing of her name always appearing on every Rotary North Ryde work roster – Carolin’s personal generosity to others knows almost no bounds. Her love of family is at the heart of all that Carolin does. Her delight in the young and not so young drives her wish for everyone to know the reward of unconditional support. Carolin’s thoughtfulness and thoroughness as she does all that she can, reflects her ability to see value in everyone. As is her compassionate approach, considerate manner and capacity to give the gift of friendship with her care. “People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.” Joseph F. Newton Men. Anne-Laure returns to SydneyLast Friday, a few members of the Club met up with Anne-Laure, our Belgian exchange student from 2012-13. She came to Sydney for a week's holiday and to enjoy the beach, staying with one of her host families in North Epping. Anne-Laure is doing well, studying physiotherapy at a technical college in Belgium. She still has another year and a half to go. She has not been playing much tennis lately but is enjoying life. She was delighted to catch up and wishes everyone a happy new year.

Ray White Christmas Tree 2015 Ray White North Ryde has put up their Christmas Tree in their office and has the first gifts underneath.Representatives will be in the Cox's Road Mall during the day to encourage gift giving and promote our Tree of Joy event on Saturday 19 December.
They will be giving away 2 childrens' bikes at 12 noon when Santa comes.

Ray White Fun Run 2015 Ray White North Ryde, our local real estate company, was the winner of the inaugural Corporate Challenge Trophy at the 2015 North Ryde Fun Run. The perpetual trophy is awarded each year from 2015 to the company or organisation team that gets the most points.A corporate team gets 1 participation point for each Fun Run entrant entered in any event:
In addition, corporate teams can participate in the only competitive event – the Intercollegiate 5km Run. The first corporate team member to cross the finish line of the Intercollegiate 5km Run race gets 5 points and the second gets 3 points.
The company fielded a team of 23 members, most of whom participated in the 2km walk.
The trophy is displayed in pride of place in reception in their office at Cox's Road.

Australian Rotary Health Fun Run 2015 On Friday 19 November, Club President David Martin and Projects Director Maggie Alexander presented Terry Davies, Corporate Manager at Australian Rotary Health (AHR), with a cheque for $9000, taking the total donation from the 2015 North Ryde Fun Run to $12050.Terry was delighted to receive our contribution and outlined the work of AHR in supporting mental health research in Australia (read a full list of AHR research grants).
He specifically talked about the research conducted by Dr Lauren McLellan into youth anxiety and depression and the Cool Kids Program, which currently receives funding from ARH - more information.

North Ryde Fun Run Update 11 AugustRegistrations for the Fun Run are steadily increasing and have now reached 60, about the same level as this time last year. A number seem to be families, which is pleasing.
The student entries won't come in until the last week but we are confident we will have at least as many entrants as last year and most probably more. We know that Boehringer Ingelheim will be entering a corporate team and also several other organisations such as Ray White North Ryde have indicated they will too.
Sponsorship cash is over $11,000 and there is still some upside. There will be 10 stalls on the day, including the Harvey Norman Printshop, which will promote fitness products and their new printing business. The Printshop is printing our entrants Certificates of Participation at cost.
Planning for the event itself is on track. The Northern District Times will run a story on Graham McMaster this week (he is hoping to raise $2000 to donate to the cause) and next week, one on the Thr1ve team training for the event.
Rocky and David will be organising the volunteers needed on the day so please put up your hand to help, if you can.

North Ryde Fun Run Update July 2015Only 7 weeks to go until the North Ryde Fun Run. We have raised over $10,800 in cash and $5,750 in-kind. Bendigo Bank North Ryde has donated Bronze $1000 and the new PrintShop at Harvey Norman has just donated another Bronze $1000. The outdoor banners are up and signs and posters will be distributed by next week, ready for the schools return. Registrations are open!

Vale Sol Cohen On 24 February 2015, the Rotary Club of North Ryde lost member Sol Cohen, a great gentleman, a man of kindness and integrity. Rest in Peace Sol. Sol was the founder of Contract Pharmaceutical Services Australia (CPSA) and a member of our club for the past 9 years. He is survived by his daughter. His funeral is on Friday 27 at 10:15am at the Palm Chapel, Macquarie Park Cemetery, cnr Delhi & Plassy Road, Macquarie Park. |

Paul Erickson has advised that the Club has been successful in all three of its applications for funding.
Back in August Victoria and Maggie requested grants for the following projects:
$1000 for solar powered computers in Papua New Guinea (total project value $2500)
$2200 to support ROTARACT's Human and Hope Association in Cambodia (total project value $5500) - $3300 to be provided by ROTARACT
$2500 to support the Club's Youth activities such as Youth Exchange, RYLA and RYPEN and the Dunmore Lang Scholarship (total project value $7000)
This is a great result and will help the Club and its planned activities enormously

Car Boot SaleHot on the heels of our Fun Run, the Car Boot Sale last Saturday also had its moments. But just about everyone (who was not otherwise overseas) in the Club made a contribution. From David and Gwen battling the madding crowd to secure an advantageous (and shady) position to Annette helping to load the ute from Kennards Storage - and everyone else who wheeled and dealed on the stall. I dips me lid to you all. Thanks to Pat who had the idea, got the goods, priced then and set up the roster and to Maggie who secured the Kennards Storage facility. A special mention needs to be made of New Horizon's Garry Pearce without whose assistance the day would not have gone as smoothly as it did.

Youth is full of possibilities and ginger and men…prefer to conjecture as to what youth may develop into …rather than reverence successful old age.” He went on to say “Rotary is both young and successful…It is buoyant, hopeful, resilient. It is interested in the world and the world is consequently interested in it. Can we say that our club is buoyant, hopeful and resilient? And if not may this be one reason why people are not as interested in joining as we would hope? I think that we need, as a club, to get our ginger back, as Harris put it. |

Food for thought. |

The ConspiratorsI find it interesting that, when the very first Rotary Club was created, on 23 February 1905, the name for the club that was preferred by Paul Harris, at first, was ‘The Conspirators’.
 I guess he appreciated the fact that in garnering support for a brand new venture there is, at first, intimate discussions with a very few others to sound out interest, issues, fears and hopes. In that sense there was a conspiratorial feel to those initial discussions that eventually gave rise to the movement of which we are all a part today.
New ideas have to start somewhere and inevitably involve small groups that might wear the badge – ‘conspirators’. Our prospective merger with the Macquarie Club is a case in point. Macquarie Club first raised the prospective idea of a merger and prima facie there seems to be merit in a merger of the two clubs.
This is the issue that the ‘conspiratorial’ working group has been discussing and hopefully we will see a result that both clubs are happy with. The result that the first Rotarians achieved was described by Paul Harris who, incidentally, was neither the first nor even the second President of the first Rotary Club. Harris said “…the greatest of all things developed in Rotary is the idea of service which we now have as Rotarians.”
When we come to vote on whether or not to merge with the Macquarie Park Club, I am sure we will each consider whether Rotary service will be enhanced, or otherwise.

Thanks from Polio AustraliaAs part of our disbursements at the end of The Financial Year, The Club gave Polio Australia $500.
We have received a thank you in the form of a certificate that shows what might be one of the earliest ever recorded instances of polio. The illustration is of an Egyptian stela – possibly a gravestone – that shows a man with a deformed right foot and carrying a walking stick.
 Anyway, the Club’s donation has been appreciated.

Constitutionally SpeakingThanks to all Club Members who took the time to vote on whether to accept the new Rotary International Constitution – and thereby our own Constitution. And thanks also to those who encouraged Club Members to exercise their voting obligations!
 We achieved our required two-thirds majority and so can now sail on the Sea of Rotary in tranquil waters.
The next port of call is the By-Laws – but let’s see what happens with the Macquarie Park merger option first. Watch This Space ...

Up Up and AwayThis, the second article drawn from the archives of mouldy Rotarian magazines, concerns Rotary’s exclusivity – at least from the perspective of April 1912.
Actually, I was attracted by that edition’s cover – one of those confounded aeronautical contraptions, which were just starting to buzz around – and the comparison between them and Rotary. Both, it was suggested, afford men the opportunity to rise above the commonplaces of earth. It is still true today, even though we go faster and higher.
 Disappointingly, the magazine did not contain an article that expanded on that premise but it did have a piece on why Rotary limited its membership.
The article, written by the President of the Pittsburgh Club, put the view that were Rotary to admit everyone its very aims would be defeated and membership would not be highly prized. He compared membership to the design of the Rotary emblem and said “…the wheel typifies the completeness and balance which must exist if perfect harmony in purpose and operation is to be maintained.”
What he was getting at was that clubs needed to recruit to ensure a wide cross section of the business community but to also be careful that not too many people in the same business classification became members because this could distort the balance in the club and its activities. But, his view also underlines the importance of selecting the right new members and this is still true today.
We need to be careful not to chase numbers. What we want are members who can contribute to Rotary by virtue of their character, background and willingness to put service above self.

Viva Mexico Even before our Mexican Exchange Student arrives, on Sunday afternoon we had the privilege of trading banners with a Rotary Club of Mexico - the Club Rotario Plateros Centro Historico in District 4170.Located in the historical district right in the heart of the city of Mexico, this club has 40 people. The Club banner shows the image of the Palacio de Bellas Artes. One of the Social Committee members is Mr Mendez, father of Xany Mendez, who requested his daughter make contact with us.
Xany Mendez has been in Australia for the past 6 months while studying a course in animation at Macquarie University. She loves our country and intends to come back to do her Masters degree next year. So we may have the opportunity of seeing her again.

Plus Ca Change A sure sign of having too much time on one’s hands is reading old Rotarian magazines. Mea Culpa!But, in the process of browsing the scribblings of long dead Rotarians I have been struck by a certain familiarity with the topics they canvassed. In fact, many of the issues that consumed early Rotary consume us today and it may be that we can learn from them, or not.
However, I thought it may be an interesting column in our Bulletin to highlight some of these issues if for no other reason than to establish that we belong to a thinking organization that is not afraid of introspection and that is not afraid to develop and, if necessary, to change.
The best place to start is with the very first Rotarian magazine which was published in January 1911.
The editorial was written by (who else?) a certain Mr Harris and was titled ‘Rational Rotarianism’.
The substance of this inaugural article was about ‘tolerance’ (although in a way that only Americans could (and still can) the word became ‘toleration’.
What Harris said was (and I précis this), “ If, some day, I was to find myself looking into the eye of every living Rotarian, and I was told that I could have just one word to say, I would shout ‘Toleration’.
He went on to say…’If this Rotary of ours is destined to be more than a mere passing thing, it will be because you and I have learned the importance of bearing with each other’s infirmities, the value of toleration’.
Now, never let it be said that Paul Harris was taciturn. In fact he waxed generously lyrical for many, many, many words. So let me skip to conclusion.
Let me quote (almost) verbatim. “A grave responsibility lies on your shoulders and mine…Rotary is a huge, powerful machine (even back then!!). Unguided, it could thrash down the aisles of time a menace to all mankind. Well directed, it will become a humanizing instrumentality of which we need not be ashamed.”
I guess that if we remain tolerant of each other and of the communities in which we live and work and if we have a clear focus with generous and prescient leadership, all will be well with the world of Rotary.
In a small way I hope we will contribute in a way that Mr Harris would be proud of.

2013 Carols on the CommonYou will all remember the 2013 Carols on the Common fondly. Those who worked on the day will have recently received a Thank You certificate.

Our Club relies on the Carols for over a fifth of the funds we give to the Community from our surplus and last year, the Carols provided 22%.

Associates Get Together 6 June 2014 Twenty full and associate members met at Seb's Caffe Incontro on Friday 6 June to talk about club plans for the coming year and catch up on news. They heard about changes to membership including the four club members becoming Friends of North Ryde Rotary; Phill Isaacs, Julie Powell, Margaret Mossakowska and Seb Lentini, and Ann Fitzgibbon converting to Associate status.The potential of a merger with the Macquarie Park Club was discussed as well as the upcoming Changeover Dinner on 27 June where the new Board will be inducted.
The Associates Meeting will be held every quarter during the year in future.

Solar Powered Computers for Remote VillagesThe Club continued with the Solar powered Computer project again this year with the focus on Vanuatu. The project is a joint effort between the College of Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Castle Hill Campus and Rotary.
.jpg) The first installation for the year was in Sola, a remote island to the North of Vanuatu. It was in conjunction with Winston Hills Rotary Club. A team of teachers and students from TAFE visited the island and installed 10 computers and trained both the teachers at the school and the students. This time we did not have a solar expert and we approached a company in Riverstone who agreed to manufacture for us a “plug and play” solar system to allow us to install the solar system both safely and simply. What’s more, the Company did not charge us for the total system. Since that time, the Company, TriStek, has agreed to build and supply additional systems.The second installation of 10 computer units was carried out in Hog Harbour, Espirito Santo in Vanuatu. Again, three teachers, three students and the Solar expert form Tristek assisted in the installation and training.
Presentations were made during the year on the system at several Clubs in the District (Winston Hills, Roseville, Hunters Hill and others) which led to donations of funds. We also applied for a District Simplified Grant which was of great assistance. We won a Pink Umbrella Grant at a competitive competition held by RAWCS. Additionally, funding was received to fund a student to visit Vanuatu for the installation and training. Funding also came from a number of other sources and is always gratefully accepted. The Club held several dinners which raised funds for the project. We also demonstrated the system at Sydney Olympic Park Youth Eco Summit where we used the system in a video conference with several overseas countries. The project will be demonstrated at the Rotary Convention in the Sustainability area.
The next major installation will be on Tanna Island Vanuatu in conjunction with The Rotary Club of Hall. Again, a great project which “Engages Rotary to Change Lives”.

Fun Run Project Update - May 2014It's only five months until the Fun Run on 19 October but we are making good progress towards creating awareness of our cause and the event.
Forty-five registered for our first Awareness Seminar on Anxiety & Depression in Young People and thirty-five (excluding four club members) attended - a good result. All have been followed up and there are already 4 registrations for the June Seminar, all as a result of the last. The advertising of the seminars in the community has been successful but the corporations in Macquarie Park are very hard to penetrate. The promotion for the 25 June Seminar on Anxiety in 7-17 year olds has just started with the first posters up in shopping centres and churches. We will also promote it through the local newspapers as they were a successful channel last time.
The next steps are to detail the operational aspects of the event. Mike Hetherington together with Paul Gray from Macquarie Sport & Recreation will be working out the details in the next couple of weeks. The new Fun Run website is under construction and we hope it will be live by 1 July. It will have an event entry form and will take payments, and will promote the Seminars. We have a District grant to help fund the site which Paul Williamson (from the Macquarie Park Club) is developing through his company Complete Web Services.
The sponsorship drive so far has not been as successful as we hoped. More effort will go towards getting sponsors in the next month. If you know of any potential sponsors, please email Annette Billington or Pat Perrin and they will follow up.
We have an addition to the Organising Committee from Macquarie University Rotaract - Emma Lawson. Emma helped with the promotion of the May Seminar and she will be organising Rotaract to help with the Fun Run. We will provide an opportunity for Rotaract to sell their products from Cambodia at the event.
President Shankar has succeeded in getting a project management internship started at UTS, where he works. That might provide a project manager to help from July on - Maggie certainly hopes so!

Host a Meal for International Projects - High Tea Success There were 14 women at the High Tea organised by Annette Billington, Ann Fitzgibbon, Pat Perrin and Bev Elliot. The guest were made up of friends, neighbours and Rotarians. The High Tea was a step back in time with fine bone china cups and saucers, silver cake forks and spoons, lace and embroidered table cloths, fine linen table napkins and crystal champagne glasses. The guests were greeted with a glass of rose sparkling wine (donated by a Rotarian) as an icebreaker and then served with food and tea (also donated) including:
Guests were asked to sit with someone that they did not know - what a success! The conversations were prolific. Maggie gave a presentation about the project of computers into Vanuatu, which contributed to the donations and the conversations. Guests were asked to donate $25, however takings far exceeded that with a final tally of $540 or about $40 per person. Overall, a terrific contribution to International Projects.

Human and Hope AssociationPip Hodgson, a university student and a member of Macquarie Uni Rotaract gave us an excellent presentation on Human and Hope Association (HHA) a registered NGO based in Cambodia.
HHA's objective is to empower Cambodians to create a sustainable future for themselves, its projects include : English and Art classes for children, vocational training, university scholarships. and microfinance for those who don't have the means to borrow from banks.
HHA pays $1,180 monthly salaries for its staff and is working on an ambitious project to relocate 3 km further to a rural area at a cost of about $13,500, sponsors are welcome.

Macquarie University Rotaract Joint MeetingLast Wednesday, members of our Club met with members of Macquarie University Rotaract, in our first joint meeting of the year.
We heard about the projects the Rotaractors are engaged in, including the Human and Hope Association project empowering Cambodians to create a sustainable future for themselves with sewing and education programs. See humanandhopeassociation.org for more information.
We talked about our projects, including the North Ryde Fun Run, which they were very enthusiastic about. Emma Lawson volunteered to represent their club on our Organising Committee.
They will take a table as usual at our Trivia night in May so there will be an opportunity for others who missed the meeting to catch up with them then.

Maggie graduates from the Rotary Leadership Institute Maggie Alexander has been attending the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) and graduated last Saturday from Graduate Course 13, along with 6 other Rotarians from District 9685. DG Graeme Davies presented certificates to all.The RLI Graduate Course is run over three Saturdays from 8:30am to 3:30pm at the District Office in Thornleigh. Even though the program takes a fair chunk of time, it is thoroughly worthwhile for long-time or new Rotarians, according to Maggie. She says:
"It is a very well structured and run course with an action-learning approach with suits adult learning. It engages everyone and covers all the areas you need to be a good leader in Rotary.
You learn about everything from the structure of Rotary to engaging members, ethics, Foundation, International Service, PR and media relations. You get well organised notes in a binder.
There are interactive sessions as well as practical sessions with case studies and exercises based on real-life Rotary situations. The presenters are all experienced Rotarians and excellent facilitators. Even the lunch is up to scratch!"

Vanuatu Solar Powered Computers Project UpdateWhere are we up to on the solar powered computer project?
The initial installation of 10 units in Fomu (70 Km East of Goroka in the Highlands of PNG) in September 2012 has performed well. The second big installation of 10 more units was carried out in Sola (the Northern area of Vanuatu in the Banks Group of Islands) in July 2013. We are off to Hog Harbour during April to install a further 10 units.
This trip will be with 12 members. Three teachers from TAFE Castle Hill, two students from TAFE Castle Hill and a solar power expert from Tristec – a great Company based in Riverstone. This Company has developed and provided to us, at no charge, a total solar system which will make installation more simple.
We have received funding from District ($3,000 with 75% paid now and 25% to be provided on a successful report), from the Pink Umbrella Foundation in a competitive competition and a further $4,000.00 to cover one of the students and some of the computers. We have meetings with the Department of Education who are agreeing to install Internet which will be a first for Vanuatu School. We are also working on video conferencing to Department of Education in Sydney Olympic Park. The next installation will probably be on Tanna Island with a Canberra based Rotary Club.
Other changes made are trialling of a cheaper computer from China and different terminals which use less power. TAFE in the Blue Mountains are now involved in the project and have shipped two units into Africa and are working on a less expensive model. Cost is around $500.00. A unit was also purchased for a slum school in Philippines.
.jpg) We are still after more funds – so if you know of anybody who needs a tax deduction by giving funds to the project, please have them get in touch. This is a great Rotary project. It involves Rotary, TAFE students and teachers and the community. To see the reaction of the teachers and students when we install the equipment, and the reaction on the students we take is amazing. It really shows that “Engaging Rotary can change lives”.

Report from Tyler in SwedenA Report from Tylah
I have been in Sweden for almost two months and everything is starting to seem familiar which is really nice! I have joined a choir and will go to Italy with them in May to sing with a choir there. There are ten of us in the choir and we sing mainly English songs, which is surprising! I have also been looking for volunteer work in the community, though they say volunteering in Sweden is not common I have managed to find some work at a preschool. I am also going to go into my school on a day I have off to help my English teacher with the younger years. I look forward to both these opportunities.
Last weekend I went on a Rotary trip to a place called Varberg. We stayed in a fort and within that fort were old prison cells in which we slept; it was a little creepy but a great experience. The locals told us there is a French princess who haunts the fortress, so the boys went out late at night with candles to try and hunt the ghost down! They were unsuccessful!
I have also been doing a Swedish For Immigrants course which is really helpful and I have met lovely people from all over the world such as Somali, Pakistan, Hungary, Germany, Brasil, Austria and more.
Overall I am having a great time and we are so thankful to Rotary North Ryde for sponsoring me and giving me this opportunity.

Report from RypenJessica Lu and Emily Chau attended the Rypen weekend recently. They came to the Club meeting last Friday and talked about their experience.
RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) is a 3 day camp and program for 14 to 17 year old boys and girls. The aim is to communicate to these young people a series of ideas, problems and social experiences which will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards, and also to broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically. It encourages them to explore their ideas of problem solving in team and group activities, build confidence and develop skills to cope in a wide range of situations.

"One of the most valuable lessons I learnt was that a leader is still part of a group or a team. We often see leaders as controlling or dominating figures, but group members don’t always want to be controlled by a bossy person. I learnt that leaders are the ones that should listen most to the ideas and suggestions of others. They should know when to step forward, but also know when to step back and let others share their views and contribute to the team effort. The best thing a leader can do is encourage others to share their ideas and make them feel as if these ideas are as equally valid as their own."
Jessica's father, Sam, who accompanied her to the Club meeting, thanked the Club for giving her the opportunity to go to Rypen. Sam has asked to join our club shortly and will be sponsored by Pat Perrin.

Maggie & Mike Host their first International Projects DinnerOn Saturday 8 March, Maggie and Mike hosted their first International Projects Dinner. They invited 6 (but at the last minute 1 brought an extra to make 7) friends to join them and the theme was Malaysian cuisine.
A $60 voucher donated by Woolworths was used for food but all other food was provided by them from their garden and other grocery and vegetable shopping. Wine from their cellar was also used, rather than the 2 dozen donated, costing about $60. All up the dinner probably cost about $210.
So for an outlay of $210 less the $60 voucher, the net food and wine cost to them was $150 or $16.60 per person. The dinner raised $610 in donations. A thoroughly worthwhile activity, despite many hours of preparation.
A DVD of the Vanuatu 2013 Project was played to the guests after the Curry Puffs and Satay Prawns were served and before the main course of Beef Renday, Chicken Curry, Belachan Vegetables, Chilli Eggplant and Jasmine Rice. Then the dessert was served: Summer Fruit Compote with Lemongrass, Coconut ice cream and a fresh fruit platter of dragon fruit, pineapple and kiwi fruit.
The guests were impressed with the project but there was a good question raised about what would the students who learnt computer skills do with them if they were in an isolated village???
Maggie made laminated coasters with the guests names on them as a finishing touch to the table and had 3 of the "What in the World is Rotary?" leaflets on the table for a talking point.
The Dinner was very well received and the feedback from the guests was complimentary:
Phill Isaacs has ensured that any donations to the Vanuatu and PNG projects are TAX-DEDUCTIBLE! So now you can tell your guests they will get a tax-deduction receipt after the event.
Maggie has updated the Checklist and the Invitation Letter on the International Projects page of our club website to reflect this and added a template for the coasters.
So have a go at hosting a meal for International Projects - it is fun and rewarding for all.

Maggie in the Spotlight This month Maggie was invited to speak at the Females in Information Technology & Telecommunications (FITT) 25th Birthday and International Women's Day Celebration Lunch in Sydney and Melbourne about Inspiring Change - the event's theme. Over 360 people attended the FITT Sydney event on Friday 7 March at Doltone House, Ultimo, all from the Information Communications Technologies (ICT) industry.
Discussing the Inspiring Change theme with her were Bridget Gray from Harvey Nash, Rhody Burton from SAP, Valeria Ignatieva from Ignia, Terrie Anderson from Entrust, Ann Moffat (retired) and Pamela Young, author of 'Stepping Up: Lead culture change for diversity and growth in the Asian century'.
